Review on Mahindra Scorpio 2014

Over the years,Mahindra is well renowned for its SUV. Every year the company would bring about certain changes to the mechanical specifications, cosmetic upgradations to the exterior styling and the intrinsic features. That would make its debut in the SUV market as a new offering.But this year, Mahindra&Mahindra has put some laborious effort in bringing out an entirely second-generation Scorpio unlike that of its earlier models. Starting with the core engine that ends up to cosmetic updates, each and every part gets revamped, thus evolved out as a new Scorpio. So its a new avatar not just an update! That too this time, Mahindra proudly presents six variants on Scorpio-S2,S4,S6,S6+,S8 and S10.Lets now probe into detail what’s find to be the new with this 2014 Scorpio.

Exterior Styling:

The major changes that are made with the front fascia gives it a unique look.The blade like chrome slats are set to replace the traditional fan-shaped grille.This newly added chrome not only gives the SUV modern look but also makes it more striking.Further projector headlamps along with with an attractive LED 'eyebrows' adds beauty to the exterior styling.Introduction of 17" alloy wheels looks majestic,but the gap that is found with the wheel arches at the rear shows clearly that the wheels are small in terms of dimensions. Besides, the other features include the doors and roof and all new bumpers that are obvious to vision.

Ergonomics:

The changes are made to the interior portions with a great agility. From the dashboard to the seats, everything is built with branded quality. Fit and finish are good. The front seats are well cushioned and quite supportive for drivers. Metallic headlights that are found inside the cabin gives a good look. Considering the comforts of the rider, power window switches are placed within the access of the user. Fuel filler cover release is also located behind the steering wheel. However there is a bit lack in quality when it comes with the door handles that is too fragile to handle. Anyways,it looks extremely good when compared with that of the earlier Scorpio. The placement of narrow front seats that is found to be too close to the doors makes the passenger feel uncomfortable. So for any reason, if you want to take off the stuffs from the door pockets, the only option leaves behind you is the opening of the door. Neither you can adjust the driver seat nor you can access directly. However with the high seating position and a finely adjusted backrest angle, one can have a comfortable ride. Also, more space is being left in the middle row. The seats are so wide to accommodate up to five passengers enabling them to enjoy a long ride.

Instrumental Console:

Regarding the entertaining features, the six-inch infotainment touch screen that is being implemented is a great inspiration from the XUV500.Along with these features, GPS system has been provided as a standard. Further there are features in terms of controls and sensors. That is temperature and pressure sensors for the tyres and rear-parking sensors. Whereas the controls are being mounted on the steering wheel. However there are certain factors that are to be criticized. Especially with the poor ergonomics that can be felt in the driver’s seat. The absence of central locking button forces the passengers to make use of lock on the door handle. There is only one central bottle holder that is not so spacious to hold on the bottle.

Engine and Performance:

Regarding the mechanical specifications, there are two options with the engines, one is the 2.5 litre,four cylinder m2DiCr and the other one is the 2.2 litre mHawk engine.S4,S6,S6+,S8 and S10 trims are powered by the 2.2 litre mHawk engine. While the 2.5 litre m2DiCr will power up the base S2 trim.With the 2.2 litre mHawk turbo-diesel engine one can get maximum of 118bhp of power,while with the 2.5 litre M2SICR will churn out only up to 75bhp.However both the powertrain gets mated to the new 5MT320 five speed manual transmission.The mHawk engine is softer thus proves to be the most refined in its class.Though a bit vibration is felt around 2000rpm,low-end response has been strong as ever. When it comes with the gearbox,it is not so perfect in a way it pushes out through the slot without any gentleness thus showing its little bit notchy character.

Ride and Handling:

The revolutionary change is made with the all-new chassis and suspension system.This modular chassis is more stiff and tends to be more secure unlike the outgoing frame. Also, this new chassis and suspension system helps the novices to drive better .With the new suspension system that is being provided at the front is lighter and sports service-free hub. It's sure that the upcoming generation cars from Mahindra will underpin this chassis and suspension system as their base. However, the clutch is a bit heavy ,that leads to lack of ease while shifting the gears. Though the wheelbase remains the same,the track is made somewhat wider such that the Scorpio gets mounted onto it in a gentle manner. Also, newly added anti-roll bar is made to support the the rear axle. For safety concerns ,ABS-equipped brakes have been provided. The SUV is well adaptable at low speeds. Also,while riding in a fast manner, pitches and bobbins are nevertheless felt.Wider tracks can be claimed as one of the reasons for those planted high speeds. With the handy steering, one can able to change the direction in a quicker manner. Overall, Scorpio pampers the passengers with a comfortable ride.

Variants:

Regarding S2, it tends to get the following features as standard that includes air-conditioning, steering, power windows, central locking and 15-inch steel wheels. Further it gets the 7 and 9 seater arrangement. Next comes the S4, it gets all the features of S2 that is entry level variant with 7 and 9 seater arrangement that too comes along with the provision of side facing configuration. Inaddition to this, it gets tilt adjustable steering wheel and bigger 17-inch steel rims. Also, the 4WD option have also been added to it. The variant S8 the safety features have been enhanced with the provision of dual airbags and ABS. Regarding seating configurations, in addition to the existing 7 seater front-facing and 8 seater side-facing configurations,7 seater (captain seating) is also being provided. Only the variant S10 gets the standard LED eyebrows. For entertainment purpose,6-inch touch screen infotainment system with GPS navigation is being provided as a standard on S10 variant. Further its prominent features include touch-screen infotainment system, rain and light sensors, steering-mounted audio and cruise control switches, reverse parking assist, Micro-Hybrid technology. As like that of the variant S4,4WD is also being provided as one of the options.

Verdict:

The proverb “Slow and steady wins the race” better suits the launch of this new Scorpio.The reason is after a long span of the period that has been taken to bring up the Scorpio, it gets revealed out as six variants, with good looking, better seating position and best riding that can be experienced with this all new Scorpio. It would be even better if it gets a slicker gearbox. January 24,2008 - Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M), India’s leading automotive brand declared the launch of of the Mahindra Scorpio SUV and its Pik-Up range in Brazil in partnership with Bramont-Montadora Industrial e Comercial de Veiculos Ltda.The models introduced in the Brazilian market are powered by the 2.6 litre Mahindra Common Rail engine that delivers 110 hp. The models are available with 4X2 and 4X4 electronic shift on the fly and the engine conforms to Euro III emission norms. From 2009, Mahindra vehicles were offered with a Euro IV compliant engine.
