Review on Mahindra Rexton

Mahindra launches the variants of the Rexton following the success of XUV500 which has been marked as the Mahindra’s first premium SUV offering.Mahindra has putforth this idea mainly to strengthen its power in the SUV segment. Thus Mahindra owned SSangYong launched its Rexton SUV positioned as the rival to the likes of Toyota Fortuner.

ENGINE&PERFORMANCE:

Mahindra offered the Rexton in two variants, both with the same basic 2.7 litre five-cylinder engine, but in two different states of tune-The base RX5 variant, good for 162bhp and 34.7kgm of torque, was mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and a ‘Torque on Demand’ four-wheel-drive system. The power delivery is so liner that makes the driving easier not looks like that of burdensome. The fully-loaded RX7 version produced 184bhp and 41kgm, and came with permanent AWD and an automatic gearbox. The 5 speed manual gearbox takes a little effort to engage with the engine to cope up with the the automatic option,but the engine tends to produce tad noisy-Further the shift-on the fly controls have been provided for the 4WD which, coupled with the manual gearbox, as an added option. When compared with that of RX5, RX7 get more features whereas the mechanical parts remain to be the same but it lacks in the spacious cabin. In an attempt to give the customers a wide variety of options.Mahindra has added a new mid-level RX6 trim, that satisfies both the features of Rx7 as well the mechanical specs of the RX5.whereas the price ranges between the two. It is mainly designed to target the chauffeur driven customers who are in seek of the comfort features of a premium SUV.

Rexton's cabin looks fresh, while the seating arrangement are made in a comfort manner with the aid of soft-cushion, soft-touch to overcome the defect met in the RX7. Plastics on the interiors also give it an upmarket feel. Like that of its previous model RX7,the new RX6 comes loaded with goodies such as a sunroof, touch-screen display with a DVD player and satellite navigation, rear parking sensors (but no reversing camera), a powered driver’s seat with memory, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps. Further RX6 sports premium leather upholstery, gear knob leather wrapped , automatic easy function for driver seat, day and night IRVM auto, speed sensitive steering wheel, memory function with 3 pre-sets for driver seat and ORVMs, electric sunroof with tilt/open function and sun-blind, automatic headlamps, and rain sensing wipers.A 8-way adjustable driver seat has now been enhanced from manual to electrically mode. The RX6 also has features intelligent 4x4 Torque on Demand (TOD) system. Safety is guaranteed with the SUV that comes equipped with electronic stability program with off switch, anti-slip regulation, active rollover protection and side airbags.

RIDE&HANDLING:

The steering is soft to handle. Safety kit on the RX6 includes front and side airbags, ABS, ESP, anti-roll protection and hill-descent control. The suspension setup reminds us that of the its rivals possessing double wishbones in the front and a live axle at the rear.The Rexton is a bit too softly sprung, Though the high-profile tyres doesn’t give the stability feel,it never fails to absorb the bumps at high speeds.

VERDICT:

With this new, cheaper but fully-loaded RX6 variant, Mahindra wants to attract customers who can look beyond the badge and who prefer an SUV that simply offers a knockout value package. But the query that is posed is that “Does it pack in enough to put a good fight?”
