You will soon be able to legally check whether the new speed monster you bought does the promised zero to 100 in 9 seconds flat and takes you from Delhi to Jaipur in under three hours. For the first time since 1989, the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry is to notify new speed limits that would allow personal cars to go up to 100 kmph on expressways. All other vehicles (including two wheelers, if allowed on those stretches) will have an upper limit of 80 kmph on expressways. On all other four- or six-lane national and state highways, the speed limit for personal cars would be 80 kmph. For other vehicles on these roads, the limit will be 70 kmph and two-wheelers will be allowed to go up to 60 kmph. Similarly, district roads and urban arteries will have a limit of 50kmph. The new limits may become applicable from this month.
