UM motorcycles has planned to enter in the Indian market by October of this year. The US based manufacturer has showcased their two wheeler models at the 2014 Auto Expo. It plans to launch 100-400cc series bikes in India. The Renegade series will be the first launch from the manufacturer which includes 230cc Renegade commando and 200cc Renegade Sport.
The UM motorcycles has already built their research and develop center in Delhi. Currently this plant develops two new engines – 350cc, water cooled, V-twin engine. Initially the company will bring the models as Completely Knocked Down (CKD) units.
“We want to create our own niche. In India, there is space in the cruiser segment where you only have Royal Enfield today. The Harley and Triumph models are too expensive. This segment of bikes, priced over Rs 1 lakh, is growing at 45 per cent and is currently at two lakh units a year. We expect this to touch four lakh units in five years, with our company having a 10 per cent share,” said Rajeev Mishra, director, UM India.
