Auto Majors – June sales

The two- wheeler auto industry continues to take a hit, it continues to report negative growth as against four wheelers that continue to record increase in sales. Especially the companies — Maruti, General Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra — posted impressive growth on the back of new launches. 

Two Wheelers: 

Hero Honda sales declined by eight per cent at 2,55,200 units in June 2007, from 2,78,660 units during the same period, Bajaj Auto, recorded a 12 per cent decrease in its total two wheeler sales to 1,64,758 units in June (1,88,231 units). Bajaj saw a 12 per cent negative growth in motorcycles with its sales at 1,62,253 units and 11 per cent decrease in its three wheeler sales at 22,866 units. Bajaj, however, increased its exports by 42 per cent with sales at 48,675 units as compared to 34,369 units in the same period last year.

TVS Motor Co Ltd sold 107,117 units in June, down 15 per cent from 126,290 units sold in the same month last year. Motorcycles sales fell 39 per cent to 47,380 units from 78,271 units, while scooterettes rose 3 per cent to 25,962 units from 25,148 units. TVS exported 9,133 units in June. 

Passenger car: 

Maruti:

In the passenger car segment, however, Maruti Udyog Ltd on Monday reported a 25.48 per cent increase in its sales at 56,000 units in June 2007 as against 44,626 units in the corresponding period last fiscal. Maruti exported 3,917 units for June, a three per cent increase from 3,799 units in the same period last month. During June, Maruti witnessed highest growth in the A3 segment that includes models such as Esteem, SX4, by selling 3,923 units as against 2,680 units in the same period last year, reporting a jump of 46.4 per cent in sales. Maruti’s sales increased by 38.3 per cent in the A2 segment (Alto, Wagon R, Zen, Swift) at 37,646 units as compared to 24.0 per cent growth in the C segment (Omni, Versa) in which it sold 8,017 units. However, Maruti saw a 20.3 per cent dip in its sales in the A1 segment that includes its flagship model, Maruti 800.

Hyundai motors:

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) sold 27,653 units, including16,335 units in the domestic market and 11,318 units in exports during June this year as compared to 27,251 units last year, recording a marginal increase of 1.4 per cent.

General Motors:

General Motors saw a 43 per cent increase in sales in June with sales at 4,779 units (3,346 units). General Motors sold 4,779 units in June this year as against 3,346 units in the corresponding month of the previous year. This includes 1,550 units of Chevrolet Tavera, 1,227 units of Aveo, 498 units of Optra and 1,504 units of Spark.

Honda and Skoda:

Honda Siel Cars India Ltd (HSCI) recorded a growth of 27% in sales during the month over the corresponding month last year. The company sold 4,503 units in June 2007 against 3,549 units in the same month the previous year. Czech luxury carmaker Skoda Motor posted a marginal 2% increase in sales in June at 1,008 units against 989 units in the corresponding year of last year.  

Tata Motors and Mahindra:

Tata Motors sold 44,317 commercial and passenger vehicles in India and overseas last month. Tata Motors reported a dip of 5.7% in its passenger car at 17,418 vehicles in June against 18, 463 in June last year. Its flagship model Indica’s sales decreased by 4.4% at 11,727 units while the sales of the mid-size Indigo declined by 18.4% at 2,354 units.

Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) registered a growth of 50%, selling 16,814 vehicles. During this period, the company sold 2,389 units of Logan sedan, the lone car model of the company. Exports for the Mahindra during the month grew 89 per cent to 1,002 units compared to 531 units in June last year while total sales grew 52.2 per cent to 17,816 units.
