Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300

Suzuki’s Hayabusa was the fastest motorcycle (Claimed top speed of about 321KPH for 1999 models) before the 2001 detuning agreement. From the 2000 and 2001 models top speed of the Hayabusa is restricted by the engine management system. Suzuki’s Hayabusa is now challenged by BMW K1200S, Kawasaki ZX-12R and Kawasaki ZX-14R but Kawasaki or Honda or Ducati or BMW cannot claim their bikes as the fastest production motorcycle in the world because the Hayabusa will retain that title until the detuning agreement has been lifted – if ever. Suzuki has rolled out 2007 variant of Hayabusa named GSX 1300RZK7. The 2006 model of Hayubusa is popularly known as GSX 1300RK6. Hayabusa’s may be costly but know that you may not be able to afford a Buggati Veyron 16.4 – the world’s fastest production car which is around Rs 8crore, but for a price of around Rs 10 lakh or the price of two Maruti Swift, you can have the world’s fastest production bike – for your garage. Here’s the technical specification of limited edition of Hayabusa 2006 model. hayabusawhite.jpg

Maruti Suzuki’s new Grand Vitara

Maruti’s new SUV for India:

India’s successful auto maker Maruti is slowly moving up the value chain, it wants to establish dominance in higher segments. After launching SX4 in the A3 segment, it eyes SUV market. Maruti is not new to this segment, earlier it tried in 2003 with Grand Vitara. The 2003 Grand Vitara battled with Hyundai Terracan, Ford Escape, Mitsubishi Pajero and Chevrolet Forester. None of these SUVs made great strides in India. Infact by that time, when D was yet an alphabet and not an automotive segment Maruti Suzuki upgraded the vitara in the same year and launched India’s most powerful (166bhp) SUV of that time. Grand Vitara was sold not thru dealers but by separate marketing time that too not boosted its figures. The Vitara was viewed as an overpriced car also its link with India’s top economy car manufacturer spoiled Vitara’s future. Grand Vitara was discontinued last year. Now Maruti feels Indian customers has become more mature and also the SUV market is growing fast in India. Maruti Suzuki will roll out its new Grand Vitara or Escudo soon. This SUV will come to India via CKD route.

Engine and Powertrain:

In United Kingdom, Suzuki offers the new grand vitara in three engine options – 2.0L and 2.7L petrol and 1.9L CRDi (DDiS-Diesel Direct injection System). For India 4cylinder, 16Valve, 2.0L engine which produces 138hp and a maximum torque of 183Nm in 4000rpm may be offered. Unlike the Maruti Suzuki‘s 7 seater SUV Grand Vitara/escudo XL-7 is powered by 154bhp and 166bhp engine, the new Vitara/escudo is a 5 seater and weighs 230kg less than its predecessor. But the new vitara’s/escudo’s power to weight ratio is lesser than the segment leader Honda CR-V (Suzuki has to bring its 145bhp, 193Nm motor to improve this). 5 speed manual and 4 speed automatic may be offered in India. A reason to worry about the new Vitara is its refinement is found bad in whatcar road test Suzuki claims fuel efficiency/mileage figure as 11kpl for manual transmission and 10.5kpl for new Vitara’s AT variant. Here is a reason to believe Suzuki’s words, Maruti’s Grand Vitara’s XL-7 returns 7-8kpl.

Styling and Engineering:

This is a compact SUV no intimidating look or no sharp shoulder lines in the new vitara too. In the design area it’s very simple to give verdict, if you liked Vitara’s predecessor, you’ll like the new Vitara too. Same, if you don’t like the previous Vitara.

New vitara is a sharp little truck. Positives include the honeycomb grille, clearlens headlights, wheel flares that impart a sense of power, and simple yet attractive body lines. An aerodynamic roofline leads to a discreet tailgate spoiler and the spare wheel is retained on the rear door.  New Vitara features larger rear combination lamps that integrate into the thicker “C” pillar design. Access to the cabin is easy; the boot has a side-hinged door (similar to the Ford Endeavour). A clever piece of Suzuki’ engineering can be felt in the tailgate. Opening to a full 90 degrees, the gas strut for the side-hinged tailgate has a two-position stop. The first stop at about 65 degrees ensures that the tailgate – with its protruding spare wheel – does not accidentally swing into the path of passing traffic. At the same time, when the tailgate is in the intermediate position, the right hand tail-light is un-obscured while illuminated at night – a useful safety feature.

The predominantly black interior uses bold silver highlights and circular motifs, while the seat materials use geometric designs and surfaces: high quality materials pleasing to the eye and touch. Comfortable cloth seats, and brushed aluminum trim breaking an otherwise all-black interior are pleasing to the eye but the gauges could have been positioned well.

Because of the low central tunnel, the new Grand Vitara provides plenty of leg- and headroom in both the front and back seats, and five adults can sit comfortably. The cabin is not so noise free, you can feel engine noise and wind noise inside the new vitara though the cabin is free from road noise, according to whatcar. The rear seats fold in half and tip forward to create extra load space, but they can’t be removed unlike the other SUVs. With rear seats raised the new Vitara offers 398L of boot space and it offers 758L when rear seats are folded.

Ride and Handling:

Ride and Handling characteristics are according to the test drive on new Grand Vitara by the Whatcar magazine.

The Grand Vitara’s four-wheel-drive system carries four modes (all in a dial under the temperature control) for nearly all types of situations. The 4H mode is for navigating the highways and byways of everyday driving. The 4H locking mode locks the center differential when conditions get slippery. The 4L Lock mode is for tackling seriously muddy, rocky hills. In this mode the differential is always locked and will help to descent the muddy hills. The fourth mode is Neutral, which allows you to tow the vehicle on all four wheels without racking up mileage.

New Grand Vitara’s ‘built-in ladder frame’ construction when compared with the body on frame design of the predecessor permits lower floor heights, in turn lowering the centre of gravity despite the high ground clearance of 200mm.

New Grand Vitara’s handling characters are good with Mcpherson strut suspension at the front and Multi link type at the rear. The brakes are ventilated disc at the front and leading and trailing drum type at the rear. If offered in India this must be the only D segment SUV with drum brake at the rear which will easily make the buyers to keep distance from the new Grand Vitara. New Grand Vitara also falls in its Ride characteristic – the ride does not give any confidence to the new Grand vitara’s rider.

Safety and Special features:

Similar to the other SUVs, the new Vitara features side impact beam, ABS with EBD and Airbags for the safety of its occupants. Special daytime running light is an added feature in the new Vitara. The new Vitara’s reinforced cabin design directs the force around the cabin in case of a collision and thus protects its occupants. The new Vitara follows the unique fate of the Indian SUVs chance of getting a traction control or  Vehicle stability control system for the Indian Vitara is low.

New Grand Vitara’s features include power windows, locks and mirrors, remote entry system, adjustable steering column, steering wheel controls for audio and cruise, three 12-volt power outlets, front and rear automatic climate control, cargo cover, outside temp and fuel consumption gauges and audio systems. Suzuki is showing keen interest on its vehicle security, surely a welcome development. Maruti has embedded immobliser for its existing line up. The new Grand Vitara will also feature advanced security system.

Price and the Launch:

Though, it is believed that the new Grand vitara will be priced in the range of Rs 16 and Rs 17 lakh Maruti always surprises its peers and buyers through aggressive pricing. But for the new grand Vitara the magic is inevitable to sell against much superior SUVs like Honda CR-V. Maruti Suzuki’s brand name and its wide service network also may push the sales of new Vitara. The new Grand Vitara is expected to hit the showrooms within the next two months.

Customers expectation from Maruti:

Maruti Suzuki is a company which always understands and absorbs the changing trends also it’s the one which is very serious about its customers. Maruti’s entry level SUV the gypsy still rules the Indian roads. Now, Maruti’s die hard gypsy customers wish a new one from it. This is the right time for the Maruti to consider new Gypsy when Mahindra’s Bolero is hitting incredible sales figures. Will the Maruti listen?

Maruti’s Line-up:

According to autocar, Maruti Suzuki is planning 12 model ranges on four platforms for India by 2010. The future launches will feature the next generation M and K series engine replacing the existing F and G series engine. Maruti might launch a diesel variant of its existing line up (zen, wagonR, Alto, omni, versa or SX4). Esteem may replaced in the form of three box swift that will get the Fiat’s Multijet engine and it will be launched by January 2008. New WagonR plus and an alto successor is also on its cards. Maruti Suzuki hopes to sell 10 lakh vehicles by 2010(20lakh cars will be sold in India in 2010) with these models.

Nissan

Nissan’s new SUV..

The world’s fifth largest manufacturer – Renault Nissan may be late entrant to India but that does not seem to halt the enthusiasm of world’s fastest growing manufacturer. Nissan –Renault –Mahindra has palnned to invest around Rs4000 crore for their new plant in Chennai. Renault has rolled out its wide body car Logan and Logan already tops the segment in Auto magazines/portals comparison test. Similar to its sibling, Nissan wants to be a serious player in India. Carlos Ghoshn the CEO of Renault-Nissan said, Nissan and Renault may sell cars in same segment in India in future. Nissan and Renault may also opt for different marketing partners for distribution of their cars. Nissan India currently offers Teana sedan and Nissan X trail SUV in India. X trail is the only popular product of Nissan India. Nissan has exhibited the new Nissan X trail in recently held Geneva Motor show. Nissan has ambitious plans for India from 1.3lakh car to sporty sedan 350Z, but Nissan will wait and use the X trail for its brand building till its Chennai plant is ready for production. Let’s check the new X trail!

Engine and Powertrain:

New X trail is offered powered by four engines (two petrol and two diesel). Of the four engines for the western market, only one petrol engine is carried forward to the new X trail. But for the Indian new X trail, Nissan may go for the diesel engine. The 2.0L diesel one with 150hp and other with 173hp, Torque outputs are 320Nm and 360Nm respectively, 90 per cent of which is developed, in both cases, at a low 1750rpm. Both engines are fitted with diesel particulate filters to minimise emissions Transmissions will be a choice between a six-speed manual and CVT automatic, or a six-speed auto for the 173bhp diesel.

Styling and engineering:

Truly this kind of vehicles is easy to market – the new Xtrail is all about clever engineering. From the users feedback Nissan has carefully engineered the new Xtrail. New X trail is evolutionary, rather than revolutionary.

In the styling, Nissan retains the classic, solid shoulder line, large glasshouse and the window and tall SUV proportions of the original for the new X trail. With a high mounted stop lamp integrated to the frame and extended tail lamps looks afresh from the rear. Low loading sill and larger tail gate are clever engineering but new X trail too miss sidesteps which is very important for SUVs. Soft feel materials feature on all touch points, while grained plastics and flocked surfaces in contrasting shades – black and grey or black and sand – are used throughout the cockpit. Depending on the trim level, instrument surrounds and other features are finished in silver or titanium colours to give a technical feel.

In the new X trail instrument cluster has been positioned behind the steering wheel; unlike the existing X trail’s centre-of-the-dash mounted instrument panel. This move is claimed to allow greater versatility in the centre console and provide space for the audio system. New X trail is slightly larger than before: its wheelbase has increased by 5mm to 2630mm, while overall length has risen by 175mm to 4630mm. Much of this extra length can be found in the trunk area, which has increased dramatically in size (from 410L to 603L). A notable feature in the new X trail is the intelligent double-decker trunk – trunk with a sliding drawer under the floor where valuable items can be stored away from prying eyes. The drawer has partition walls that can be placed in a number of different positions or removed altogether as required. This has been achieved by rerouting the exhaust silencer from its original transverse position under the boot floor to a north/south location alongside the rear wheel well. Raised ribs have been placed at unequal distances apart to help prevent loads shifting when the vehicle is on the move.

For better ride and handling:

New X trail features strut-type suspension at the front with a multi-link system at the rear, both ends being mounted on separate rubber insulated sub-frames to provide enhanced refinement and isolation from vibrations. With the approach and departure angles as 28 and 23 degrees and with a generous 200mm ground clearance, the new X trail will be able to traverse difficult terrain with a comparative ease.

Safety and Special Features:

Apart from the standard safety features which includes airbags, ABS and EBD, new X trail features the intelligent four-wheel drive system. Intelligent 4x4i includes two unique systems to Nissan: Downhill Drive Support (DDS) and Uphill Start Support (USS). USS is a fully automatic system that maintains brake control on 10 percent inclines until the driver starts to move away. DDS uses the vehicle’s anti-lock brakes to maintain a descent speed of 7 kilometers-per-hour, enabling the driver to concentrate on steering.

New X trail’s long list of equipments includes power windows front and rear, and Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity. Principal options include Xenon headlamps, roof rails with fully integrated driving lamps, and satellite navigation with a full colour screen shared with the rear parking camera.

Price and the launch:

Nissan India say that the new X trail would most likely be in India “within a year or maybe sooner” and pricing would be slightly higher than the current version’s Rs 25-30 lakh range, due to the higher 113 percent import duty on fully-built vehicles.

For Nissan’s Indian Line up

Toyota Vios and Fiat Linea

Two hot sedans for India:

The big majors are eyeing mid size segment though rolling out small cars is their core aim. Maruti has rolled out its SX4 sedan and Mahindra – Renault has rolled out Logan to grab their share in this segment. Soon this segment will welcome two new sedans – from Fiat and Toyota. Both Toyota and Fiat are hoping niche market share in Indian automotive industry by 2010 and this will be their first foray into voluminous sedan segment (2nd fastest growing). Toyota has exhibited its 3rd generation ‘Vios’ in recently held Bangkok motor show and Fiat has launched its ‘Linea’ sedan in Turkey.  Let’s see what Vios and Linea has?

Engine and Powertrain:

Toyota’s Vios:

Toyota Vios is almost same as the Toyota’s much popular yaris sedan and Belta. These cars are much popular in Australia and Japan. The 2nd generation Vios is the segment leader in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Toyota Vios is Thai Car of the Year 2003.  The Vios will head India via CKD (Completely Knocked Down unit) route.

Toyota Vios is powered by a Toyota’s proven NZ series engine. The 1.5L, 1NZ-FE engine which powers the vios develops 80KW (109hp) and a maximum torque of 142Nm at 4200rpm.  The same engine is used for the 2nd generation Vios. The 2nd generation Vios is well known for its frugal and clean nature and will lure Indian customers if it delivers the same in India. The Vios is complained for its underpowered nature and the Vios turbo is available only in Thailand. The turbocharged 1.5 liter engine with an air-to-air intercooler produces 143 PS with light boost. If Toyota brings this vios to India it will surely rock but the chances are less.

Fiat’s Linea

For the turnaround of Renault – Nissan its Carlos Ghoshn, while for the Fiat Its Marchionne’s – the man who mastered the new generation Fiat. Linea is one of the products of new generation Fiat and it’s derived from the Fiat’s much popular hatchback Grande Punto

Two engines are available at present: the 1.4 petrol delivering 77 bhp and the 1.3 Multijet diesel with a power output of 90 bhp. Linea may also be powered by a1.4L Turbo T-jet, petrol engin delivering 120 bhp and a much powerful 1.9L JTD engine (uniJet Turbo Diesel is Fiat Group’s term for its current common rail turbodiesel engine). Fiat may consider other engine options too but an engine from FIRE (Fully Integrated Robotised Engine) family and Swift’s, Punto’s 1.3L Multijet diesel is for sure. Manual as well automatic gearboxes will be offered.

Styling and Engineering:

Fiat Linea

For making a sedan take a popular hatchback give it a boot and doors that is what clever engineering in modern automotive industry. Fiat follows the same for its Linea but its not just a extended version of popular Punto hatchback.

Fiat Linea clearly has an international vocation; it was designed by the Fiat Style Centre, and its exterior styling is elegant, dynamic and typically ‘Italian’. The aim was to appeal to the public with uncluttered, smooth lines which confirm the new Fiat family feeling (from the Grande Punto to the new Bravo), while they offer a new reading of the stylistic elements of the great Italian motoring tradition in the saloon segment. This extraordinary stylistic heritage has now produced the Fiat Linea, a 4-door saloon that is sleek and elegant, but with generous dimensions that put it at the top of its class: it is 4.56 metres long, 1.73 metres wide, 1.5 metres tall and has a wheelbase of 2.6 metres, as well as a 500 litre luggage compartment.

The same attention went into the styling of the interiors of Linea, where the lines are harmonious and balance well with the exterior, creating a friendly, light-filled environment that provides an amazing amount of room and superior comfort, where ergonomics and space for the driver and passengers are concerned. And it is in terms of the quality, comfort, practicality and enjoyment of the interior that the Fiat Linea aims to make the difference, backed up by the refinement of the materials and by the colour combinations, as well as the attention paid to every detail and to the assembly. Designed for an elegant, refined clientele with plenty of personality, the Linea is agile and enjoyable to drive in all situations.

Toyota Vios

Unlike the Fiat Linea, Toyota Vios is not an eye catcher. Vios derives most of its design cues from its big brother Camry. After the Hyundai verna, this kind of sedans with short overhang is familiar in India. Vios looks bulky from the front with large grille and large headlamps. The hood lines flows through the grille to large front bumper. The body coloured wing mirrors integrates indicator lamps. Curvaceous but not so large tail lamps just touches voluminuous boot.

The 3rd generation Vios which is to be launched has almost identical dimensions (4300mm*1700mm*1460mm) to Honda City. Similar to the corolla, you can expect decent space for rear passengers and not for the Driver and the front passenger from the vios. Accessibility to instruments and storage space are only for those with pixie hands also the Thai auto journals criticized vios for its noisy passenger cabin. Though in JD power initial quality study (IQS) vios finds a position, it is ranked below Honda city. But don’t forget Vios is much powerful and frugal than city.

Similar to the recently launched Chevrolet spark Toyota Vios’s instrument binnacle is set in the centre of the dash. This arrangement not only leaves most of the dash clean and uncluttered, it also allows the instruments and warning lights to be at a distance and an angle that allows the driver to read them with minimal eye movement. But some dislike and prefer a conventional location.

Safety and Special Features:

Fiat Linea:

The Fiat Linea is equipped with a reliable suspension layout which guarantees very easy, precise steering, excellent roadholding and the best possible comfort for passengers: an independent MacPherson system at the front, and semi-independent wheels connected by a torsion axle at the rear. Regarding the safety – Stable, effective braking, good acceleration guaranteed by the engines and predictable handling, get the Fiat Linea out of even the most critical situations. Linea is also very well equipped where passive safety is concerned, a fact borne out by the presence of airbags; it also adopts a number of innovative technical elements that ensure the driver always has total control of the car (active safety): latest generation ABS, complete with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) and, optionally, the sophisticated ESP (Electronic Stability Program). ESP is supplemented by the ASR/MSR, a system that prevents front wheel skidding in acceleration and deceleration, enabling the Fiat Linea to move effortlessly on low grip road surfaces. The ESP includes the Hill-Holder, a device that lets you stop and start on uphill roads without having to pull the handbrake.

The range also proposes equipment worthy of a higher segment, such as certain sophisticated climate and infotainment devices that improve the comfort and quality of the time spent on board: from automatic climate control, the Blue&MeTH system with USB port, a radio with CD-player (including MP3 files) and Cruise Control, down to rain, dusk and parking sensors. In other words, there are endless possible combinations which may convert Fiat’s Linea an excellent value for money (if correctly priced) and the best price-content ratio.

Toyota Vios:

The safety features and equipments in Vios are on par with sedans of its class available in India. The rigid (40% High tension steel) and light body vios chassis assures agility and stability. ABS with EBD used to control this 1tonne vehicle. Mc pherson strut is used at the front and torsion beam suspension at the rear. Rear seats are provided with ‘S’ shaped springs to minimize fatigue over long distance traveling. Audio controls are embedded in the steering wheel.

A revolution ahead:

Fiat aims to slot in top 10 car manufacturers by 2010 and Toyota to sustain the No 1 mark both has to tap one of the fastest growing market India and they seems to have ambitious plans for India. Fiat expects to sell 50,000-60,000 units on an annual basis by 2012. The current C-segment in India is around 2,00,000 units, which is expected to double in 5 years and Toyota eyes 10% market share 2010 and 15% market share by 2015. Both Toyota and Fiat has immense potential in manufacturing great cars, all they have to do in India is to launch their popular products here, if they want to be a volume player. Through Linea and Vios – Fiat and Toyota I’m sure that they can reach their target.

Toyota Vios will take on Maruti Suzuki’s SX4, Chevrolet Aveo and segment leader Honda city and vios is expected to hit our shores by the end of this year or early 2008. For the Linea, Fiat has launched the saloon in Turkey in the price range of 15,000 – 21000 liras (Rs 4,61,981 – Rs6,46,774) and if it is priced in India in the same range, Linea will take on SX4, Aveo, Fiesta and City. A wide variety of engines is available for the Fiat India to power Linea hence the possibility of Fiat’s positioning Linea against Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Skoda Octavia cannot be ignored; Linea can be positioned between the upper C-segment and the entry D-segment sedans. With Linea’s design cues heavily derived from Audi, it has the potential to match them.

Tata’s new Indigo DICOR

Facing the competition..

The sedan segment has become more competitive because of the entry of new players like Maruti SX4 and Mahindra Renault Logan. Especially, the Mahindra Renault Logan 1.5L CRDi and Swift 1.3L Diesel(because of the heavy interest rate, part of the demand in the lower-end of the mid-size market has moved down to the hatch segment) is giving Indigo a tough battle.

Tata Motors in February launched the Direct Injection Common Rail (DICOR) diesel engine version of Indigo sedan and the Indigo Marina estate range.

new heart for the base Indigo..

Now on May 17th,Tata Motors has announced the launch of its entry level common rail diesel (DICOR) offering in the sedan range with the Indigo LS version(the base variant).

The silent, 32 bit microprocessor based 1.4 litre, 70 PS engine with a high torque of 140 Nm offers the most contemporary diesel engine technology, featuring high pressure multiple injections, use of hydraulic and low friction mechanisms ensuring better combustion and more fuel efficiency.

The 16-valve engine has Dual Overhead Camshafts, which enhance the high end power output of the engine and a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT), which minimises the turbo lag at lower engine rpms for improved driveability.

Attractive DICOR:

The Indigo DICOR LS version (the base variant) comes equipped with Heating & Air-conditioning as well as Power Steering. This model also features beige coloured interiors along with body coloured bumpers, and is being offered in six attractive colours. Now with the Indigo LS DICOR at Rs.5.25 lakhs, it becomes the country’s most attractively priced common rail diesel offering amongst sedans.

The Tata Indigo range has been a best seller in the entry mid-size segment since its launch in December 2002 and has sold over 150,000 cars till date.

Toyota’s new corolla

Toyota’s Indian line-up..

Everyone is talking about the success of Honda Civic, but they failed to notice Toyota Corolla is regaining its some of the lost ground. Toyota sells 1083 units of Corolla in March which is almost twice than its usual sales. But for the world’s NO 1 car maker which eyes 10% market share in one of the world’s largest growing market – India by 2010, this won’t be enough. Toyota plans to launch a C segment car ‘Vios’ which will take on Honda city and Maruti SX4. Toyota’s small car is also on the line. Toyota will also launch a new corolla to completely regain the lost glory. The only short come with the existing corolla is it has a generation ahead car – Honda Civic in its category. To make the Toyota lovers happy, it will launch the 10th generation/2007 corolla in India soon. Let’s see what can we expect from the new corolla?

Engine and Powertrain:

The new corolla will get much torqueier 165Nm at 4200 rpm 1.8L engine and the new corolla will have a 1.6L dual VVTi (Variable Valve Timing Intelligence) and a new 2.0L CRDi engine. The 1.6L corolla will be positioned between Maruti’s SX4 and Honda Civic. The 1.6L engine pumps out a maximum power output is 124 hp at 6,000 rpm while the dual VVT-i technology ensures a remarkably constant torque output for a petrol engine, peaking at 157 Nm at 5,200 rpm. The new CRDi engine which develops 125bhp might be used to position the new corolla between soon to be launched Ford’s new Fiesta and Hyundai’s new Elantra diesel. If diesel corolla is launched this will be Toyota’s Diesel foray in India. Derived from the Toyota’s much successful 2.2L diesel engine, the new 2.0L diesel engine delivers 126 hp with a constant torque output of 300 Nm from 2,000 to 2,800 rpm. This means outstanding mid-range in-gear performance for maximum driving pleasure. For better emission control self- cleaning particulate filter is also available with this diesel engine. A conventional five-speed manual gearbox will be available with both petrol engines and for the 1.4-litre diesel a six-speed manual may be offered.

Styling and Design:

Exteriors:

The all-new Corolla is distinctive and different and it will be good even when viewed from a distance. Its low and wide stance (because of increased front and rear track) creates a sporty and dynamic look that is enhanced by the clear character lines and complex surface structures. While offering customers the traditional benefits of a classic three-box configuration, the new Corolla achieves more of a one-form style by moving the base of the A-pillar forward and integrating the trunk space within the slope of the rear pillars.

corolla-front.jpgcorolla-rear.jpge-corolla-rear.jpg

photos:new corolla front/rear/existing corolla rear

In side profile it is clear that the new corolla is not a hatchback with a trunk added as an afterthought – indeed the sleek, dynamic look is further enhanced by the increased overall length, low roof profile and slim pillars.

From the rear the new corolla looks almost the same as the existing corolla except for rear spoiler and aerodynamic panel beneath the rear bumper. The tail gate now gets the body colour.

Interiors:

In comparison with the current model, the overall height of the new Corolla (1,470 mm) remains unchanged while interior space and headroom increased through clever packaging. The result is the new corolla has more shoulder, hip room and very comfortable seat height. The upper surface of the dashboard has been lowered to create a sense of roominess and the panel is fully integrated into the relaxed curve of the high quality door trim to create an almost seamless surround. But American journals criticize Toyota for not giving enough space for tall drivers – pedals are too close, front passenger leg room also is not appreciable.

In the rear, the new corolla is as good as existing one, the space for the rear passengers are very good and is enhanced by minimizing the backseat floor hump(by making the front muffler and catalytic converter into one unit) to create flat-surfaced legroom, enabling three adults to sit in the rear comfortably.

Safety and Engineering:

Safety is embedded form the design rather than incorporating active and passive features. One of the design targets of the new Corolla was to reduce both accident repair times and costs. To help achieve this, the radiator core and air-conditioning condenser have been designed to move backwards in a collision rather than absorb the impact. The radiator support along with the front and rear bumper reinforcements are bolted on rather than welded and headlights have breakable and replaceable brackets so the headlight can be reused. Safety features including front air bags air bags, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, which operate in conjunction with the anti-lock braking system, may be offered as standard.

Independent Macpherson’s front suspension and non independent suspension at the rear is offered for the new corolla. Disc brakes for all wheels and Engine speed sensible power assisted steering to control the new corolla. Even in western markets, there are voices criticizing the price of the new corolla and hence we shall wait and watch how and to what extent the trims are made for the Indian corolla.

What can we expect?

The new corolla is expected to be launched by the end of this year or in early 2008. The corolla one of the world’s successful car is upgraded in a nice manner. Its superb design and nice engineering makes it truly the next generation car. But 2007 new corolla has added more points only on its strength, the weakness more or less remains the same the poor driver’s space and ride and handling characteristics is also been not welcomed in western markets. But if Toyota makes some of this right while raising the suspension for the Indian model, Don’t miss the most reliable car you can pick anywhere in the world.

Bajaj new Discover 135cc

Another Jaadoo!

Following the Splendor’s and the Pulsar’s family, the jaadoo family gets a new member. It’s new Discover 135cc. Unlike the 100cc segment, the 135cc segment has intermittent stops. Hero Honda’s Ambition and Yamaha’s RXZ were offered in this 135cc segment but stopped later. Bajaj has now launched a variant of Discover in this segment. Bajaj wishes to add more bikes in the executive bike segment where it’s the leader. Bajaj has introduced the new Discover in the 135cc segment to fill the gap between the Discover 125cc and Pulsar 150cc.

Engine and Powertrain:

The new 135cc heart pumps out 13.1PS at 8500rpm and a maximum torque of 11.88Nm at 6500rpm. These are better figures than the discontinued 135cc Hero Honda’s Ambition. Similar to Bajaj’s other offerings, Discover 135cc engine features proven TRICS, DTSi and ExhausTEC technologies which make them special. Transmission continues to be through the same four-speed gearbox. The engine delivers 57kpl in our city and highway combined test drive. Discover 135cc clocks a top speed of little over 100kmph.

Styling and Engineering:

The new Discover 135cc looks almost styled/engineered like its 125cc or 112cc sibling except for the following changes.

  • Contemporary black theme from NitroX chamber to coil springs to exhaust finisher to heat shield to rear view mirrors to handle bar end weight.
  • Slim chain cover i.e. open type. I suspect this will harass owners in long time also being 135cc – the Discover does not qualify for hard core bikers at the same time whether the commuter will like it.
  • Wider rear tyre 100/90 instead of 100/90X17 rear tyre instead of 125cc discover’s 3.00X17. But rear tyre hugger is missing.
  • NitroX shock absorbers borrowed from Pulsar
  • Instrument panel gets an rpm meter and now fuel indicator is centered between two large circles. Ride control switch is offered in new Discover 135cc too
  • Maintenance free 12V battery

Ride and handling:

Finally the Discover gets a 240mm Disc brake at the front as standard. The new Discover 135cc weighs 4kg more than its 125cc sibling to bear the extra weight Discover 135cc gets a new suspension. The new NitroX suspension at the rear is borrowed from the Pulsar for the new Jaadoo. The telescopic front suspension with a travel of 130mm is also best in the class. With this new suspension, the new Discover 135cc gives a much smoother ride. Seats and Handle bar position ensures comfortable ride for Discover’s rider. Double-cradle type chassis as in the 125cc Discover offers greater flexibility and the result both the straightline stability and cornering is as good as its sibling.

Price and Colours:

Red stripes and Blue Stripes perfectly matches the black themed discover 135cc. The new Discover 135cc hits the road for a price of Rs 56,485. Jaadoo – the Discover as usual seems good value for the money, but it’s already May 15th, Bajaj! Where is the much hyped Pulsar 220cc?
