Mahindra’s hybrid ingenio and Hindustan’s new SUV

Mahindra’s hybrid ingenio:

M&M is likely to offer the Ingenio as a hybrid option. M&M’s automotive sector president Pawan Goenka had said that the Ingenio will come with a variety of engine options, including the M&M’s indigenously developed common rail direct injection diesel engine. Mahindra and Mahindra is believed to be working with a combination of diesel and battery-operated hybrid for Ingenio. The end result is it would give a distinct advantage to the Ingenio with an extremely low cost of running.

Mahindra and Mahindra showcased a concept hybrid variant of the `Scorpio’ and the hydrogen engine `Alpha’ three-wheeler in the 2006 Delhi auto show. The proposed Ingenio hybrid is seen as Mahindra’s further development in that domain.  The Scorpio hybrid concept vehicle combines both the common rail diesel technology and the fuel-saving technology of an electric motor. Scorpio hybrid gives 15-16 km per litre delivering up to 600-700 km on one tank of fuel. The vehicle is propelled by using CRDe (common rail diesel engine) and an electric transaxle supported by a traction battery. This helps the vehicle to provide better fuel economy and lower transmission, while giving the benefit of a full hybrid performance.

The hybrid versions will cater to the demand of urban areas while petrol and diesel powertrain variants will target other markets,” company sources told ET. Toyota Innova currently comes only in petrol and diesel versions. Ingenio is now being built on a new platform and M&M has ditched the idea of utilising the ageing platform of Balero. Also the ingenio will have a monocoque platform and not the conbody-on-frame chassis. M&M has earlier tried voyager van(developed with Japanese major Mitsubishi) in the MUV segment but it ended in a failure note.

M&M  which does not have any MUV(Multi utility Vehicle) has 6 models Scorpio, Bolero, Invader, Commander, Maxx — in the utility segment.  MUV is currently dominated by Toyota’s Innova.

Hindustan – Mitsubishi’s wakes up:

Hindustan Motors on august 28th announced that it has firmed up plans to launch premium sports utility vehicles (SUVs) in the price range of Rs 15-25 lakh from the Mitsubishi stable within six months. In june 2007 Mitsubishi proposed that it would introduce a new model by the end of 2007 to increase its product portfolio to five. Mitsubushi – Hindustan is seriously mulling to enter the mass segment through a small car(possibly mitsubishi’s ‘i’). The proposed car and the new SUV will be manufactured at HM’s Chennai plant.(at Uttarpara in West Bengal, Hindustan produces Ambassador cars.) Hindustan have decided to launch new cars and come up with upgraded variants of existing Mitsubishi cars at least twice or thrice in a year. Hindustan is also expanding its dealer base which now stands at 39. Currently Hindustan manufactures Pajero and Montero SUVs two cars — Lancer and Cedia under the Mitusbishi’s label with prices ranging between Rs 6.97 lakh and Rs 34.11 lakh. With all these new launches Hindustan – mitsubishi plans to catch up with other manufacturers. It seems to be sleeping giants finally decides to wake up.

2007 JD power Sales Satisfaction Study

SkodaIndia has moved to the top position in sales satisfaction according to the JD Power Asia Pacific 2007 India Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study released on Wednesday, up from the second place in the last year study. The Aurangabad-based wholly owned subsidiary ŠkodaAuto has been operating in India since 2001 and currently makes 13 models. It has sold 44,000 units to date. J.D. Power Asia Pacific, established in 1990, conducts customer satisfaction research and provides consulting services in the automotive, information technology and finance industries.

Sales satisfaction is based on six factors: delivery process, delivery timing, salesperson, dealer facility, paperwork and deal. Škoda performs particularly well in three factors: delivery process, delivery timing and paperwork. Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra follow Skoda in the rankings, respectively.
Recording a single-point increase over 2006, the overall satisfaction in the industry remains static. Six of the nine nameplates ranked in the study record improvements compared to 2006, with Ford and Toyota posting the highest improvement since 2006. The study finds a change in financing patterns since 2006. While more customers report receiving cash discounts, fewer customers are taking loans to purchase their cars. Sixty percent of customers report receiving a cash discount in 2007. When comparing cash discounts with two value-added offers—free accessories and free extended warranty—customers report greatest satisfaction when they receive a free extended warranty, either in combination with a cash discount or with free accessories. Satisfaction is highest when an extended warranty is combined with a cash discount. Satisfaction falls marginally when an extended warranty is combined with free accessories in lieu of a cash discount.  “Extended warranty is not only beneficial to the customer but also helps the automaker ensure that the customer is retained within the network for post-warranty service,” said Mohit Arora, senior director at J.D. Power Asia Pacific. “Given the fact that the average consumer replacement cycle is approximately five years in India, provision of extended warranty is not only a source of additional service revenues, but also helps the dealership to influence the customer’s next vehicle purchase.” Additionally, the study finds that the percentage of customers who took out a loan to finance their new vehicle decreased to approximately 80 percent in 2007 from nearly 90 percent in 2006.  “Increasing interest rates in the Indian market and differing manufacturer retail policies may partially explain this decrease in new-vehicle buyers seeking loans,” said Arora. “While regional differences exist, we see a greater propensity for customers to purchase their vehicles with cash, particularly in the small car segment.” The study also finds that customers who financed their vehicles from nationalized banks report greater satisfaction with the entire experience, compared with those who financed from multi-national banks and other private sources.
The study, now in its eighth year, examines satisfaction of new-vehicle buyers with the sales and delivery experience at two to six months of ownership. The 2007 study is based on responses from 5,083 owners of 40 different vehicle models, and the study was fielded from March 2007 to June 2007.

Toyota’s Indian small car plan

Following other car majors such as Volkswagen, Renault and Honda Japanese auto major Toyota on August 22nd said it could launch a small car in India within two years and its second plant may come up at the existing location in Bangalore. Toyota is said to be weighing its options between India and Brazil for locating the small car project. The company had set a target of garnering 10 per cent of domestic market by 2010 and said it would need a small car to achieve the volumes.Toyota’s announcement on its small car has been expected for months now the company has given some hints. What’s important is similar to Honda, Toyota is planning two new small cars not one as beleived.

NDTV on August 21st reported that Toyota is having active negotiations currently with the Kirloskars, Toyota’s partners in India to finalise the strategy for a small car launch by the end of this fiscal. Tata’s new car runs on air

Tata – MDI air car:

mdi-tata-air-car-minicats.jpgIn February 2007 Tata Motors signed an agreement with MDI of France for application in India of MDI’s path-breaking technology for engines powered by air. MDI or Moteur Developpment International of France has successfully developed engines running on CAT (Compressed Air Technology) and has been testing them in a number of cars. MDI founded in the 1990s has been mastering the technology which might one day become world’s ultimate environment-friendly engine. Economictimes reported that Tata is planning to roll out a car running on compressed air next year in India. It also repoted that Tata Motors is currently experimenting with the technology on its different models and mass production of the ‘Air Car’ could commence next year. But what i believe is Tata may or may not come with a air car but surely this MDI’s car have much impact on Tata’s proposed one lakh car. Tata might have learnt how to build a light weight car with a less powerful engine, how to design transmission systems for such car etc. from MDI.

What are the benefits of CAT engine:

The car is absolutely pollution free not only because of no combustion but also since the oil that lubricates the engine will need to be changed only once every 31,000 miles. MDI’s engine deliver the lowest running cost and that could be much lower than CNG, the cheapest on-road fuel (with a running cost of a rupee per kilometre) right now. The cost of a fuel refill would be about Rs 90, and each refill is expected to deliver a distance in the range of 150-200 km. MDI’s engines are gasoline, fuel gas, bio-diesel, liquid gas, ecological fuel, alcohol and ethanol blend compatible. The result is with the incorporation of bi-energy (compressed air + fuel) the CAT Vehicles have increased their driving range to close to 2000 km with zero pollution in cities and considerably reduced pollution outside urban areas. The engines will work exclusively with compressed air while it is running under 50 km/h in urban areas. But when the car is used outside urban areas at speeds over 50 km/h, the engines will switch to fuel mode. While the car is running on fossil fuel, the compressor refills the compressed air tanks for future use. The temperature of the clean air expulsed from the exhaust pipe is between 0 and 15 degrees below zero and can be subsequently channelled and used for air conditioning in the interior of the car. The mono alternator in the air car helps in braking but also for recharging the car.

Recharging:

Compressed air can be filled into the car or other vehicle’s tanks from what is called a roadside Air Station or the car can be plugged into a household electric socket for running the on-board air compressor motor that compresses ambient air and stores it. To fill the tanks at filling stations it will take about to 2 to 3 minutes, through the household electric socket (220V or 380V) the tank can be filled completely in 3 or 4 minutes.

Tata’s air car:

Tata’s zero pollution cars are expected to be in the same price band as the current Indica range (approximately around Rs 3.50 lakh). These pollution free vehicles are expected to deliver a maximum speed of up to 220 km/hour and their debut may coincide with the launch of the Rs 1-lakh car, next year. MDI has created prototypes of four vehicles powered by this air engine. These include a car, a taxi that can ferry five passengers, a pick-up truck and a van. Many of them have features that may be a good fit with Tata Motors’ plans for future vehicles. Here is some interesting features MDI has developed and is working on

* MDI;s air car do not have normal speed gauges. Instead, they have a small computer screenthat shows the speed and engine revolutions. The system allows for infinite possibilities such as GSM telephone systems, GPS satellite tracking systems, programs for delivery people, emergency systems, internet connections, voice recognitions, map presentation and traffic information.

* Regarding safety, MDI’s seatbelt system is different from what we know. One part of the belt is anchored to the floor of the car, like traditional cars. The other part of the belt, in stead of being attached to the side of the car, is also anchored to the floor of the vehicle. This helps to secure the bodies of the driver and passengers in the case of a collision.

* MDI air car’s electric system is also revolutionary. MDI has bought a patent that is bound to reduce the important of electrical systems in all cars. The trick consists in using a small radio signal. The system makes the car 20 kilos lighter and considerably quieter.

* MDI is also considering a system to replace traditional keys. This system would utilize an access card. With this card it would be possible to open the car from a short distance away without having to actually insert anything in the car.

* MDI’s CityCats are rear powered and the engine is under the floor at the rear of the car as this design conserves more energy when compared to a front-wheel drive vehicle. We have already reported that Tata’s one lakh car will be a rear engined one.

* MDI plans to replace classic tyres with “green” tyres which can increase mileage by 4 – 5% further.

How the air engine works:

The engine works on what is known as CATS or compressed air technology system, whereby typically a two-stroke engine is fed compressed air, which has been stored in fibre-glass tanks at high bar pressure (approximately 150 to 200 times the pressure in car tyres). The compressed air expands in the engine’s chamber and drives the pistons and a single crankshaft to create movement that is then transferred to the wheels. Relevant changes to the pistons, connecting rod and other engine components are made to enable the engine to run on just compressed air.

Regarding the gearbox, Gear changes are automatic, powered by an electronic system developed by MDI. A computer which controls the speed of the car is effectively continuously changing gears. Through this the gearbox achieves the objective of seamless changes and mimimal energy consumption. Air car’s special pneumatic system recovers about 13% of the power used.

How the chassis and Body assist the engine:

Tata’s one lakh car may take most clues from MDI in this section. MDI has put together highly-resistant, yet light, chasses, aluminium rods glued together. Using rods enables us to build a more shock-resistant chassis than regular chasses. Additionally, the rods are glued in the same way as aircraft, allowing quick assembly and a more secure join than with welding. This system helps to reduce manufacture time. This kind of chassis for the one lakh car may facilitate Tata to manufacture the 1 lakh car in satellite plants.

Unlike the majority of traditional cars on the market, MDI’s air car body is made up of tubular, light weight fibre is held together using aerospace technology. This technology has two main advantages: cost and weight. As a result of this extensive use of fibre MDI taxi model weighs just 700 kg. Indian customers who ones loved Ambassador for its soldiness may suspect this ulta low weight car’s safety but MDI says the fibre is safer (it doesn’t cut like steel), is easier to repair (it is glued), doesn’t rust etc. MDI is currently looking into using hemp fibre to replace fibre-glass, and natural varnishes, to produce 100% non-contaminating bodywork.

Safety of the air car:

The tanks enjoy the same technology developed to contain natural gas.In the case of a major accident, where the tanks are ruptured, they would not explode since they are not metal. Instead they would crack, as they are made of carbon fibre. An elongated crack would appear in the tank, without exploding, and the air would simply escape, producing a loud but harmless noise.Airbus Industries oversees the making of the storage tanks at each MDI factory.

Hyundai Pa Pictorial preview

Very few information about this upcoming car from Hyundai is available. Here are those

1) Hyundai’s PA will come in three variants, and is likely to be priced in the Rs 3.9-4.5 lakh segment, right in the middle of Santro’s top-end model and Getz’s low-end model. Hyundai may plan to launch the PA this september to tap the festival demand.

hyundai-pa-car.jpg

2) Hyundai’s PA resembles the Kia’s picanto hatchback(Kia is the Hyundai’s subsidiary). PA will compete with other sub-compact segment cars such as Chevrolet spark, Maruti Suzuki zen estilo, Maruti Suzuki wagonR and Tata Indica xeta in India and would rival Fiat’s panda in europe.

hyundai-pa-car_1.jpg

3) Hyundai’s PA may be powered by the santro xing’s 1.1L petrol engine. If this is true this 1.1L will power three models ( santro xing, getz prime and PA) of Hyundai India. No diesel for the PA(atleast in India) since Hyundai feels a diesel engine for the PA might be an expensive offer also since its getz CRDi is on the cards Hyundai don’t want any cannibalisation . Hyundai officially told that it have no plans to strap a diesel engine in the PA.

hyundai-pa-car_2.jpg

4) Hyundai’s PA will not be just a refurbished version of santro, it will be a completely new car. PA will be more upmarket and will have more contemporary features. Gear lever in the PA will be integrated with the dashboard instead of conventional floor shift pattern.

hyundai-pa-small-car.jpg

Hyundai’s sales has been falling in the past months, the company desperately needs a car to maintain its market share of 20%. Will the PA help in Hyundai’s revival? we have to wait till the launch.

LML’s new vespa scooters NV SPL & Select II

LML is back

LML (Lohia Machines) is planning to make a comeback with its Vespa brand geared-scooters. After a break of 14 months,LML has launched its 150cc Vespa brands – NV SPL and Select II with an on-road price of Rs 35,000 in New Delhi this week. LML has started operations with two dealers in New Delhi and is targeting sales of 500 units in the next few months. NV and Select are not new scooters they are the same old scooters that LML used to produce and export. LML stopped its production in Kanpur plant in Feb 2006 due to severe financial crunch, the plant has an installed capacity of 3 lakh scooters & 2.4 lakh motorcycles. LML had five motorcycle models in the domestic market before February 2006. LML used to sell around 1,000 units a month in the national capital region(Delhi) before it downed the shutters. LML resumed partial operations in April with the export of geared scooters to Egypt, West Asia and Africa, besides Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.Revival plan:

Lured by the robust domestic demand for scooters(despite the poor show of two wheeler industry, the scooter sales are up by 17% during the first four months of the current fiscal year), LML plans to revive the operation. LML also has ambitious plans for export market- the company which exported 16,000 units till July and is now targeting another 50,000 units during the rest of the fiscal year. Rs35000 may be needed to take home the scooters -NV SPL and Select II. LML which introduced the scooters in Delhi will gradually get into Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir and then to West Bengal, Assam and few others. LML, which was once the fifth largest player in the motorcycle segment, does not plan to re-enter that lucrative and mass-volume market before its operations are revived entirely due to the massive investments required in the plant. For capital ,to come out of the financial crisis LML has registered with the Board for Industrial & Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) and has submitted a revival plan with a strategic investor and fresh capital investment. Currently LML uses the initial advances made from exports for domestic operation and it bets on domestic sales to generate some working capital for its future operation.
