Peugoet plans come back

Peugeot plans to set up a shop in India all over again. Peugeot was among the earliest multinationals to enter the country in 1993-94 and the first to shut down in 1997. This is not the first time Peugoet is planning a comeback, it joined hands with Tata Motors in 2000 to carry out a feasibility study for the 307, but that died a quiet death. Peugeot’s three-year stint in India was marked by labour trouble, leading to a plant lockout, shortage of CKD (completely knocked down) kits for the 309 and, finally, a showdown with its Indian partner that required the intervention of the court.Despite getting a judgment in its favour, the company decided that enough was enough and closed down its plant in end-1997.In the process, it left nearly 2,000 employees as well as vendors, dealers and borrowers in the lurch. Most of them still have bitter memories of their experiences but have moved on with life. While this could still haunt Peugeot, the fact remains that it does not benefit from staying away from one of the world’s hottest car markets.

to source components from India:

PSA Peugeot Citroen SA, the largest car maker in France, is tying up with Canada-based Magna International Inc. to buy components from India for its global operations, the first time the two are collaborating for purchases. The PSA Group plans to source €3.3 billion (Rs19,008 crore) worth of auto parts from low-cost countries such as India and China by 2010. Currently, PSA sources around €230 million worth of parts from low-cost countries other than India.“Magna identifies sourcing opportunities for the PSA Group in India and will provide support,” said Prasen Agali, executive director of Magna International’s Indian unit. “Some sourcing out of India has started in the middle of this year, but it will pick up in a big way in 2008,” he added. Agali didn’t quantify how much would be sourced from India. The services provided by Magna to PSA would typically include identifying vendors, checking their past performance in terms of quality standards, cost levels and delivery times, and setting up a system of placing orders. International automobile manufacturers such as General Motor Corp. and Volkswagen AG are increasing their sourcing of auto components from low-cost countries in general and India in particular, as they battle higher labour and health-care costs in their home countries. General Motors, for instance, has said it wants to buy up to $1 billion (Rs3,934 crore) worth of auto parts every year from India by the turn of the decade.Exports of auto components from India increased 33% to $2.8 billion in 2006-07, from $2.1 billion a year ago, according to the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India, an industry body.Magna International, which clocked $24 billion in revenues last year, is targeting to source $120 million worth of auto parts from smaller Indian vendors by 2010, up from about $20 million now.The PSA Group stopped manufacturing cars in India after a failed alliance with Premier Automobiles Ltd in the late 1990s, although a presentation on its website says it is reviewing its India strategy.

Cars and Bikes launched in 2007

Few months back you may not be used to stand in the long queue of petrol/diesel filling stations. You were not supposed to wear helmets and pay hefty sum for crossing yellow lines. But in between the period of just 12 months, without your new swift or splendor you may not have reached your office in correct time. Things change a lot once you bring a motor to your home. A lot of action happened in Indian Automotive sector. Every year pushes the benchmark forward and products are only going to be more better every year. 2007 was one such year and Indian customers came across some major launches like spark, logan and SX4, a world premiere (Hyundai i10), and a lifestyle (getaway) in 2007. Many manufacturers from Ford to Hyundai to chevrolet went the diesel way and to increase the life of the product many limited/upgraded editions were launched. Millions of dollars were invested(or proposed) by global auto makers, betting on India’s double digit growth and low cost manufacturing. Carlos ghoshn made the term ‘frugal engineering’ which later went to become synonymous to India. Mahindra surprised everyone with the AXE – Indian version of Hummer. Though no major launches were made by them ,this year Tata’s and Mahindra’s were too busy just because they chased Ford’s land Rover and jaguar with tooth and nail. In 2008 India is going to see some incredible products ranging from Tata’s 1 lakh car to Hyundai i20 to skoda Fabia to Toyota’s new corolla to Honda’s new accord.

In two wheeler space, while Bajaj surprised everyone with as many as 6 new launches, Hero Honda which was never under trouble, added value to its rock solid splendors and passions. Though 2007 has not been a good year for TVS the proposed 7 new products which includes the Flame 125cc and apache RTR FI has already created enough buzz in the market. Fair sex is given enough attention by two-wheeler makers in 2007. Bajaj rolled out the kristal in the 100cc segment, Suzuki and Kinetic came up with new access and flyte respectively. Atlast In 2007 Yamaha started showing its true colour, R1 and MT-01 will hit showrooms in a few days. It plans a new 150cc in 2008. Interestingly you can buy a brand new bike for just Rs20000 in 2007. The chinese backed Xenitis created ripples with the new 100cc Rock. Global auto already proposed that it will come with a 150cc bike for Rs30000 in 2008. The big trio has to take note of it.

Similar to the tax affiliated to passenger vehicle, few things left unchanged in auto sector in 2007. There was no major turnaround in the space of safety and emission of the vehicle. Indians continue to drive in dangerous conditions and are vulnerable to accidents. Expecting the things to better atleast in 2008.

Our hearty wishes to every new customer who added spirit to the Indian automotive industry.

BMW X5 Pictorial Review

1) After tasting the success with the 3 series and 5 series in the luxury sedan segment, BMW sets its eye on Indian luxury SUV market with its popular X5. X3 would hit soon.

bmw-x5-exteriors-side-view.jpg

2) The 3.0L six cylinder diesel engine of X5 develops 231 bhp and 52 kgm (from 2000 to 2750 rpm). The turbocharged, common rail diesel engine has been paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. According to BMW X5 will take just 8.3 second run to reach 100 kph.

bmw-x5-diesel-engine-hood.jpg

3) X5’s convex-concave surfaces perfectly support its generous proportions and muscular wheel arches. Dynamic light and shadow progressions demonstrate elegance and presence with their robust appearance and clear structure.

bmw-x5-front-kidney-grille-headlamps.jpg

4) Similar to other BMWs ,the quality of the materials used and the way they are put together shame most other 4x4s and the X5 remains among the best cars BMW has ever produced. Mercedes has to take note of it. X5 benefits from Dynamic Stability Control which incorporates ABS, ASC (automatic stability control), HDC (hill descent control), trailer stability control, dynamic brake control, cornering brake control, ADB (automatic differential brake which acts as a differential lock) and a CFO (control freak officer).

bmw-x5-rear-view.jpg

5) Though the X5 uses lot of electronic assist system it is still a little firmer, edgier, and more aggressive in the way it translates driver inputs. The X5 uses variable ratio steering, changing the lock-to-lock steering wheel distance depending on your speed. The wishbone type front suspension optimizes tire contact on the road and makes the new X5 capable of reaching impressively high cornering forces.

bmw-x5-interiors-dashboard.jpg

6) One of the more remarkable features in the X5 is its panoramic moonroof, a vast expanse of glass over the front and middle-row seats. Push a button in the overhead console and a large portion of it slides back and lets in lots of fresh air and sun/moon light. Only sour note inside the BMW X5 is the small size of the third-row seat, which makes it impractical for use by adults. We have really appreciate the kind of engineering that BMW has put into the X5. The small third row seats can be folded completely flat can be used to load lots of cargo. Parcel shelf and use of hydraulic system to lash the load down all makes the bay a multi-functional. The new X5 is fitted with run-flat tyres and hence no spare wheel tyre.

bmw-x5-cargo-rear-seats.jpg

7) BMW X5 new xDrive is a permanent all-wheel drive system, which uses sensors and digital aids in transferring varied levels of drive power between the front and rear axles. Torque-split-by-demand xDrive also helps in cornering. When the vehicle senses that it was about to understeer or oversteer the vehicle can independently cut traction to either of the front wheels or rear wheels to help regain stability and keep the driver on the road. BMW X5’s driver assistant Hill Descent Control system will be helpful while driving on a smooth rocky surface or slippery downhill surfaces. bmw-x5-passenger-cabin.jpg

8) The new X5 is being priced at Rs 62.9 lakh for buyers in India. BMW will start delivering of X5 from december this year.X5 will compete with Merceded M class.

Toyota plans Innova CNG and corolla CNG

Toyota Kirloskar Motor will soon launch CNG fuel variants of its premium sedan Corolla and multi-utility vehicle Innova. The Corolla and Innova will be the first ever CNG fuel based offering by the Japanese major in the world. The company is currently testing various types of CNG kits on these innova and corolla at its Bangalore based facility and the formal launch of these variants are expected sometime in December. The new kits for CNG are being supplied by Minda Auto Gas, which is also the original equipment supplier to Hyundai for its flagship car Santro and Maruti Suzuki for its LPG based WagonR Duo. Toyota deputy MD K K Swamy confirmed that the company is looking for the right CNG fuel options. “We are currently studying the options that can be strapped on both these models,” Mr Swamy said. Toyota will launch the CNG variants of Innova and corolla in Delhi and Mumbai, where CNG gas is currently available. That will followed by launches in other CNG-compliant cities like Surat and Agra.

Toyota is looking at the CNG option to tap the vast commercial segment of tour operators and fleet owners. Innova is the market leader in this segment and sales of premium sedan Corolla are also increasing. While sales of Innova have been increasing due to strong demand, Corolla sales have slightly dipped to 3,740 units in the April-October period from 3,925 units last year.Toyota is banking on the high-demand of CNG vehicles, which deliver high mileage and offer low cost of operation. Already a large number of CNG and LPG cars are available in the market including General Motors Optra, Hindustan Motors Lancer, and popular compact cars like the Santro and the WagonR Duo.

150cc challenge – Hunk Vs Unicorn Vs X-treme Vs Pulsar Vs apache RTR

Battle b/n the beasts:

In 2007 alone two new premium bikes have been launched. As competition becomes tougher its hard to find the right products suits for you and more than introspection, comparison shows the true colour. We here compare all the 150cc bikes and dig out the pros and cons of the products. TVS apache RTR 160 included in the ‘battle b/n the beasts’ because of competetive price. Let’s watch the battle!

Design and Styling:

Whether its pulsar or unicorn or X treme or apache rtr or hunk every bike is either evolutionary or revolutionary in design dept. The black theme, aircraft type fuel lid and alloy wheels have become universal and it now features on all bikes. Though the basic design is not altered, pulsar has metmarphosed into a new bike with constant upgradation. Bajaj’s keen care makes the pulsar even to match the new generaton bike like apache rtr. But too much of pulsars in the road has started developing fatigue. Honda has always been conserative. Though unicorn styling is evergreen it cannot conceal the age. Also lack of contemporary features like LED tail lamps, digital speedo and gas charged suspension makes the unicorn outdated. Xtreme’s face(headlamp) inspired from unicorn fails to charm though it has sexiest back of all the bikes. Large LED taillamps, bulleted silencer mouth and horns like supportive split grab rails scores the credit. Racy design with neccessary racing stripes, chiseled tank, stylish engine cowl, petal type disc brake and leaf shaped rear view mirrors makes the RTR one of the best looker. Hero Honda finds a space even in this crowd. The recently launched Hunk blends the design of cruiser and racy. Red dial, analog clock setup adds extra charm to the Hunk’s macho look. Though Hunk has not achieved the best of both worlds it scores a lot. Of these bikes, Apache RTR, Hero Honda Hunk, CBZ X-Treme targets a niche market within the 150cc segment. Honda’s unicorn lures the conservative man. Pulsar 150cc which attracted the youth when it launched, now turns into a family bike.

Engine and Transmission:

This must be easiest section to decide, since three of the competetiors – Hero Honda’s Hunk,CBZ X-Treme and Honda’s unicorn shares the same engine. Unicorn’s 149.2cc was the least power producer yet it scores full points for its refinement. Unicorn’s engine develops 13.3bhp at 8000rpm and 12.75Nm of 6500rpm. Hero Honda offers the same engine with little more power(0.8bhp) for both the Hunk and the CBZ X-treme. Pulsar 150cc engine is one of the best engine made by the bajaj. The twin spark 149cc engine produces 14bhp at 8500rpm.

TVS apache rtr is powered by an 160cc engine which produces 15.2bhp at 8500 rpm and 13.1Nm at 6000 rpm. Clearly, Apache RTR is the best among the traits in terms of performance. Apache RTR has higher power to weight ratio 111.7bhp/ton.Apachian can push the redline even upto 12000rpm. The extra 10cc plays a main role for the RTR and it is the only bike in the segement capable of breaching the 110kmph mark with appreciable control. All the bikes in the 150cc segment breathes through CV carburettor, in India, Fuel Injection (FI) is yet to make a wave. All the bikes Pulsar, Unicorn,CBZ Xtreme, apache RTR and Hunk features 5-speed (1-down 4-up pattern) gearbox. Their way of functioning and design varies. Apache RTR, Hero Honda Hunk and CBZ Xtreme targets young customers and hence gear shifting is through toe levers. In Unicorn and Pulsar 150cc it is through heel and toe levers.

Fuel Efficiency/mileage:

While the Honda’s engineering makes the mill frugal for the Bajaj its twin spark technology and exhausTEC do the difference. Both the Bajaj Pulsar 150cc and Honda’s Unicorn consumes 1 litre to returns around 55kmpl in our combined city and highway drive. Hero Honda Hunk’s 150cc engine is integrated with advance tumble flow induction (ATFI) technology. This kind of induction helps the motor to burn the fuel more efficiently. Hence the Hunk has little edge over its sibling CBZ X-treme but only by a small margin(1-2kms). Hunk returns 51kmpl in our test drive. TVS apache RTR which topped the performance bar flips in the mileage dept as expected. It gives a mileage of 48kmpl.

Ride and Handling:

Power and Torque coming from the mill has to be put on the road intelligently. Considering the Indian infrastructure it is must for Indian bikes to have superior handling characteristics. Few years back Honda surprised everyone with its monoshock suspension, its light steering and single downtube frame with engine as a stressed member. The bike gives a planted feedback to riders. Though Honda’s commuter type seating offers good comfort to the riders, it hampers the Honda in scoring full points in handling section. Unicorn’s biggest loss is the CBZ X-treme’s biggest gain. X-Treme’s sporty riding position with raised footpegs and its diamond type frame helps to negotiate turns and quick directional changes. But X-treme become cumbersome to handle at low speeds espescially when you have to incredible turns in the traffic signal. Xtreme’s 240mm disc brakes offers the neccessary bite when you need it. Pulsar 150cc which rides on 17″ inch tyres is showing its age.But pulsar’s sharp braking makes the pulsar fit for the competition. TVS has equipped the apache RTR with everything to be jesse owen. Yes, it is the most athletic in the segment. Want to flick! apache RTR’s clip on handle bar, shorter wheelbase and lower saddle height will help you like anything. RTR uses different sets of tyres at the front and the rear(17″-front and 18″-rear), this setup really makes the difference for the RTR’s road stance. 270mm petal disc brake holds the bike at the press of the brake lever. Hero Honda’s new hunk inherits most character of the CBZ X-treme but the heaviest bike in the class along with the large claddings tends to intimidate while taking sharp turns.

Recently launched Hunk is the first one to feature Gas charged suspension from Hero Honda’s stable. TVS has been using Rectangular arm suspesion for a long time, other such as Pulsar and Hunk adopts it. Other than Honda’s unicorn and Hero Honda’s CBZ Xtreme, all the bikes in the segment features Gas charged suspension. Unicorn’s 3 way adjustable monoshock and CBZ Xtreme’s ride is on a stiffer side. Both the bikes transfers the vibration to the pillion. TVS MIG(Monotube Inverted Gas filled) offers better ride. Bajaj pulsar 5 way adjustable suspension set up is one of the softest. Hunk’s comfortable seating (with extra lumber support) and GRS makes it easily the winner in the ride quality. 145kg beast controls the vibration and rarely transmits. All these bikes except unicorn have handle bar weights to cushion your hands by reducing the handle bar vibration. But i have seen many of the bikers to remove the weights since it tends to hit while negotiating sharp turns.

Engineering and the goodies…

All these bike have trip meter, standard warning lamps and an analog tachometer in common. While Honda bets on quality, bajaj packs its bike with user friandly features to sell its bikes. Pulsar 150cc is the first bike to feature digital instrumentation and LED tail lights. Pulsar’s instrument panel is neatly laid out. Cable free speedometer is an another useful feature in the pulsar 150cc. TVS followed the bajaj’s way apahe RTR comes with LCD speedo analog tacho and LED tail lamp cluster. Apache RTR’s useful features includes service and battery indicators. The clip on handlebar which facilates varying the handle bar position is a must feature to be in all bikes. While the Xtreme features twin pod instrument, hunk and unicorn features hooded tripod arrangement.

Verdict:

No confusion here! the winners of this test are every bike enthusiast who pushed these makers to come out with bikes of international standard. Though indian market far from being compared to any western market. Our bike standards are growing day-by-day. Though R1 and Hayabusa are not made in india. Apache’s and Xtreme’s feature equally competetive design.

Coming back to our “battle b/n the beasts”, Bajaj pulsar 150cc and Honda Unicorn are already proven winners. Comfort factor and fuel efficiency of both the pulsar and unicorn are unquestionable and still the best in the category. But as new generation bikes like apache RTR, CBZ X-treme and Hunk are ready to take the customers to a new range of excitement, Pulsar and unicorn tends to give way to newbies. RTR’s robust performance, Hunk’s muscular styling and CBZ Xtreme’s exceptional handling characteristics cannot escape from the eyes of bike lovers. CBZ X-treme lacks contemporary styling and its stiffer ride quality leaves the race in the penuultimate lap. Also X treme is too pricey. Hero Honda has set right few of the short comings of CBZ X-treme at the same time inheriting the best of it. Hunks blends cruiser and racy theme nicely.Lack of powerful engine and absence of modern (yet practical) features makes the wrestler to lose against the athelete. Apache RTR with high performance engine, upswept styling and host of features rocks the 150cc class. The dearer price point also adds more value to the RTR.though it can improve its quality ad tweak its gearbox.

The crown for 150cc kingdom has been most voltaile and with the apache RTR FI, Yamaha’s and Suzuki’s 150cc bike are around the corners, i’m sure that a new(complete) set of bikes will be compared when we do it again in 2008.

Colour matters:

Whatever the bike you choose (depends on your indivual needs), colour matters most. Yellow matters most for the apache RTR. Bajaj Pulsar 150cc sells hot in classic black. Unicorn excels in red and Xtreme catches the eye in silver. Hunk becomes bull in black. Again this is subject to differ.

JD Power 2007 India Initial Quality Study

For the first time, three Chevrolet models rank highest in their respective segments in initial quality in India, according to the J.D Power Asia Pacific 2007 India Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) released today. The study, which serves as the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at two to six months of ownership, has been completely redesigned for 2007 to provide manufacturers with deeper insights and more actionable information to improve problem determination and drive product improvement. The redesigned IQS now examines more than 200 problem symptoms in two distinct categories—quality of design and quality of production—across eight vehicle components: vehicle exterior; driving experience; features, controls and displays; audio, entertainment and navigation; seats; heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC); vehicle interior and engine and transmission. Overall quality performance is based on both design quality and production quality problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), with lower scores indicating a lower rate of problem incidences and higher vehicle quality.

The new Chevrolet Spark leads the compact car segment with a score of 127 PP100. The Honda City and Chevrolet Aveo tie for the top rank position in the midsize segment with a score of 109 PP100 each, while the Chevrolet Optra (97 PP100) ranks highest in the premium midsize segment.
“Chevrolet’s performance in the 2007 India IQS is encouraging,” said Mohit Arora, senior director at
J.D Power Asia Pacific, Singapore. “The recent model launches from the company, combined with its
aggressive efforts in improving product quality, underscore the brand’s growing success in the Indian
market.”

New to the study rankings in 2007 are the premium compact and SUV segments. In the premium compact segment, the Maruti Swift (116 PP100) ranks highest, while the new Honda CR-V (50 PP100) tops the SUV segment. In the entry midsize segment, the newly launched Mahindra-Renault Logan ranks highest with 65 PP100, while in the MUV/MPV segment, the Toyota Innova (111 PP100) ranks highest for a third consecutive year. The current-generation Honda CR-V has been improved in a number of areas, including a new vehicle exterior and interior,” said Arora. “As a result of these enhancements, the Honda CR-V emerges as the model with the fewest problems reported in both quality and design.” The study finds that initial quality of new vehicles in India averages 173 PP100 in 2007, with more than one- half (54%) of new-vehicle owners reporting at least one problem within the first six months of ownership.

Engine-and transmission-related problems are the most frequently reported, followed by problems related to vehicle exterior and driving experience. Together, these three problem categories comprise two-thirds of the total number of vehicle problems experienced in India. Among all problem symptoms covered in the study, excessive fuel consumption remains the most frequent customer-reported problem.

The study also finds that manufacturer performance in quality of design and quality of production varies extensively. In 2007, 61 percent of all problems reported are categorized as defects/malfunctions, while more than one-third of all problems reported are related to design issues.
“Design flaws and manufacturing defects can have an equal impact on owner perceptions of a vehicle’s overall quality, and thus it is important for manufacturers to understand both of these aspects in detail,” said Arora. “Performing well in both design quality and production could provide a manufacturer with an added advantage and serve as a unique selling point in the highly competitive automotive industry in India.”T he 2007 India Initial Quality Study (IQS), now in its 11th year, is based on evaluations from nearly 6,000 owners who purchased a new vehicle between November 2006 and July 2007. The study includes 43 vehicle models covering 11 makes. The study was fielded from May to September 2007 in 15 cities across India.
