Bajaj XCD Versus TVS Flame

?Bajaj Xcd Vs TVS Flame one of the most expected battle.

Engine and Powertrain:

Both the manufacturers have claimed these machines are fitted with superior engines. Bajaj’s DTS – SI (Digital Twin Spark Swirl Induction) Bajaj finds an area where it can even improve the combustion characteristics of its popular DTS-i engine especially at light loads. By creating swirl motion inside the combustion chamber, it creates turbulence thereby it burns even the lean mixtures which results in higher fuel efficiency of the mill. Similar to Bajaj, TVS bets on swirl motion and twin spark plugs to improve the efficiency. TVS CCVTi (Controlled Combustion Variable Timing intelligent) features three ports while the swirl port creates a swirl motion of the intake air-fuel mixture to burn the lean mixtures, the powerport opens at higher rpm to allow more fuel and increases the performance.

Let’s dig out how these technologies reflects on the road

XCD’s engine develops a peak power of 9.53PS @7000rpm while the peak torque is 10.85Nm@5000rpm. Bajaj targets the 100cc customers with the XCD and it can be felt once you screw the throttle. XCD’s DTS-SI is not peppy but it truly serves the purpose. You can chug along even at 14kmph in fourth gear. Gear ratios ensures enough torque at the low end.

Flame’s CCVTi mill produces 10.5bhp at 8250rpm and 10Nm at 6250 rpm at the maximum. Unlike the XCD you cannot chug along with the flame at low speed but you can reach the 60kmph mark faster than the former . The engine is more responsive and we don’t find any issue with the gearbox at the time of testing. It also beats good. Also since the vibration is minimal v rooming with the flame will be a pleasant one.

Styling and Engineering:

XCD draws inspiration from the popular discover and Bajaj has carried the same front forward design for these commuter bike. XCD stylish character is reflected through its low mounted headlamp and the large black visor. Dynamic lines which flows from the tank to the rear cowl are inviting and makes the XCD to seem like it moves even at standstill. Bajaj has taken care that XCD should preserve the look, even while moving through its new flexible number plate mechanism which moves up and down parallel to the forks. Body coloured grab rail and sleek graphics makes the xcd more elegant. If XCD is beauty peagent with a thin waist, then flame is a fighter jet with a sharp nose. Flame’s bikini fairing scores low when compared to XCD’s. But that’s the onlysore point in Flame’s styling, besides that stylish front fenders, leaf shaped wing mirrors and 1320mm larger wheelbase gives the flame a rock solid look. But i am going tell you aobut the most important part of the bike i.e the shrouds. Sculpted shrouds makes the flame one of the best designed bike in its class. Also, unlike the XCD where shrouds are more like a protrusion, the Flame’s one blends well with the bike nature. Flame also scores over the XCD at the back, twin tail lamps and the attractive exhaust mouth of the flame is a treat to the followers.

Looking at these bikes you can understand a nature of the Indian two wheeler market i.e features leads the sales. Nowdays it has become quite often to find customers demanding alloy wheels and electric(button) start in two wheeler showrooms. For creating this much awareness on features , credit must be given to Bajaj and TVS, while market leader Hero Honda still bets on quality, these two manufacturers lure the customers with innovative features at the same time improving on quality. XCD and flame hosts some usable features like digital console and electric start. While Bajaj find a area near the saree guard to keep the documents, TVS spots a coke holder in the tank but this reduces Flame’s tank holding capacity.

Ride and handling:

Both the XCD and Flame may be styled to look alike a sport bike but the message is clear be stylish but not at the price of the comfort. In both the bikes, commuter type seating position is provided with horizontal footpegs and straight handler bar position.

XCD’s slim nature along with responsive engine helps to negotiate the traffic signal and tight corners at ease. This is because the  long stroke front forks gives the rider feedback, but only necessary! Rectangular swingarm suspension (finally bajaj adapts) which combines with Bajaj’s proven SNS suspension ensures us an ache free ride even on tougher road conditions. Seats are long as well as wider.  Disc brakes are inevitable, especially on slippery indian roads but manufacturers continues to launch products barring dic. While there is even no option to have disc brake in XCD, in case of flame you can shell out additional 3000 rupees and pick a disc fitted flame. Unlike apache, flame is more stable which is evident from its longer wheelbase but that’s not without comprise in handling. Along with the larger wheelbase, Flame height tells us that even tall riders can ride the flame without any discomfort. Ride is supple with twin tube shock absorbers. In ride and handling both the bikes are on par with each other.

Verdict:

Both the XCD and Flame scores well above class average and will deliver what you need. But that’s not what we are assigned to find, our task is more precise i.e to find out the winner!

Seems like these two bikes are targetting different set of customers but satisfy the expectations of the buyer. XCD is an attractive option considering the features, price and most importantly the mileage. It even outsmarts the popular 100cc bikes in efficiency dept. But XCD lacks in styling atleast to flame. Flame with neat proportions is eye catching and is sure to set a million heart aflame. Hi –tech CVTi engine makes the flame to lead in performance over XCD.

If you are looking for a commuter bike with fair performance but solid mileage and at low price then XCD must be your obvious choice. But if you don’t mind shelling out another 8000 bucks and wanna a stylish and youthful machine, then its the right time to book a flame.

Is direct Injection Bajaj’s next DTSi?

If you still believe RX100 is superior to pulsar’s and apache’s and trust the two stroke engines more than four stroke’s in a race, set your eye on Bajaj Auto. Bajaj may soon come with two stoke two wheeler again but this time with more efficiency. Bajaj recently introduced the GDi in its three wheelers and found that it increases the mileage and reduces the emissions. Indications are that an agreement has been finalised with Bosch of Germany for a GDI system in Bajaj bikes he Bosch relationship could logically extend to the company’s small car being planned in an alliance with Renault and Nissan.

The GDi for the autorickshaw is a Synerject (the joint venture between Orbital Corporation of Australia and Siemens VDO) system, which has now come into India with Chennai-based UCAL as the licensed supplier. Bajaj’s proven Digital Twin Spark Ignition may pave way for the much superior GDi technology atleast in smaller capacity bikes. In european markets, already there ar two wheelers powered by this technology. The Orbital system is used in motor scooters manufactured by Aprilia, Piaggio, Peugeot and Kymco. Let’s check out the GDi?

GDi – Gasoline Direct Injection, as the name implicates it means injecting the fuel directly into the cylinder. Two types of GDI are used in two-strokes: low-pressure air-assisted, and high pressure. When applied in two stroke engines, GDi makes remarkable improvement in mileage section. In conventional (carburetted) two-stroke engine exhaust port opens too early(before the completion of the stroke) and lets out the unburnt fuel charge. In direct injection technoogy the gasoline is injected via a common rail fuel line directly into the combustion chamber of the cylinder. The result is the only air comes from the crankcase(as opposed to the charge in conventional two stroke), and fuel is not injected until the piston rises and all ports are closed. This results gain in fuel efficiency and reduction in emission.

Rather than using high pressure injection to atomize the fuel charge in a manner similar to diesel injection, Orbital uses an air-assisted low-pressure direct fuel injection, combustion and engine management system: the Orbital Combustion Process (OCP) technology. With OCP, compressed air breaks up the fuel droplets. At light loads, the direct injection system allows engines to run very lean. Under high load conditions, the OCP system runs similar to a homogeneously charged engine, with good mixing of the fuel/air mixtures within the cylinder.
The cylinder head in a DI engine carries a fuel rail assembly which contains a fuel injector and a pressure regulator. Filtered fuel is supplied to the fuel rail assembly by an electric pump and filtered lubrication oil is through another. Fuel injector meters the fuel under regulated pressure and sends the fuel to the air injector. The air injector recieves the air compressed by the crank and injects this fine mist of air, fuel and lubricant into the combustion chamber. The result is more efficient atomisation which results in efficient combustion. The ECU(Electronic Control Unit) which is the brain of this system computes the speed and load desired from sensors. Crank postion sensor, throttle position sensor and engine temperature sensor sends data to the ECU. With those inputs, ECU determines quantity of fuel to be injected, timing of injection, metering of lubricant and timing of spark

Though the tech is not revolutionary and simple, it results in better combustion of fuel. Also, it is more practical and can be adapted even in the existing two stroke engine with few changes.

Skoda to hike prices

Following Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and General Motors, premium car maker Skoda Auto said it will raise prices across all models by Rs 20,000 from January next year. Skoda said the hike was necessitated due to rising input costs. Skoda currently sells octavia, superb and laura models in india. In Jnauary 2008, it will roll out Fabia hatchback.
“Input costs are negotiated on an annual target achievement basis with our vendors and the increase in prices is in line with our renegotiated terms with them. The company has made efforts to keep the price rise marginal on all models,” a Skoda India official said in a statement.

Hero Ultra Maxi EV – Pictorial Review

Amid 40 odd players offering semi imported versions of e bikes in the country quite a few are established players. Electrotherm and Hero Ultra are leading the pack. Hero plans to sell 20000 ebikes this fiscal and expects the market to grow at 200% next fiscal. Induselectrans which already sold most number of  ebikes in the country has over 200 dealers across the country. Starting with Hero’s maxi we will review popular models of both Hero Ultra and Electrotherm soon.

1) Hero – Ultra maxi EV: Hero cycles (Hero Honda group) which collaborated with UK based Ultra motor has become a established player in the electric vehicle(EV) market in India. Compared a year before, Hero – Ultra line-up has grown significantly and now it can satisfy wide range of customers. Starting from flash, eazy, Dash, Hi-Moto, Advanta and Maxi which caters to the need of under 18 to hi powered Velociti and Optima which lures even the fully grown adults.

hero-ultra-products.jpg

2) Hero – Ultra maxi EV: Hero -Ultra slogans “plug in and ride out”. Also, by riding one of these electric vehicles you can save the earth as it is pollution free. Here is one of the popular product from Hero – Ultra called ‘maxi’ (accounts almost 80% of the total sale).

hero-ultra-maxi-front-view.jpg

3) Hero – Ultra maxi EV: The design is simple with steeply raked aprons and neatly mounted turn indicators. Since the electric motor occupies small space maxi looks slim with neat proportions. Dual-tone shades spruce up the scooter and the three spoke alloy wheels adds charm to it. Though paint quality is top notch, switches and controls are flimsy.

hero-ultra-ev-maxi-side-view.jpg

4) Hero – Ultra maxi EV: Maxi is a regular scooter and is similar to your activa or scooty pep but returns 70km/charge (according to hero-ultra) and makes your monthly budget debt free. To completely charge the battery, it requires 6 to 8 hrs Maxi is the most efficient EV among Hero’s products. According to these electric vehicle manufacturers, running a electric vehicle costs just 1/10th of the running cost of a similar two wheeler. You can charge the maxi with your regular plug point.

hero-ultra-maxi-ev-side-view-2.jpg

5) Hero – Ultra maxi EV: Maxi makes use of SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) battery. Power Output of this maxi is below 250W and its maximum speed is limited to 25kmph which means you don’t require license to ride the maxi. Electric bikes fall under exempt category (for the approval of ARAI) on account of power less than 250 W and max speed less than 25kmph. Hence you can ride maxi without a license, registration and road tax. Just hop on ride away.

hero-ultra-maxi-rear-view.jpg

6) Hero – Ultra maxi EV: Maxi can be loaded upto 75kg that means you can take your children along with you when go for shopping. As there is minimal mechanical parts a stress free ride is ensured. Though the charger occupies some space, you can find usable storage spaces both under the seat and in the front glove box.

hero-ultra-maxi-dashboard.jpg

7) Hero – Ultra maxi EV: Ride comfort is good with coil type suspension at the rear. Since the speed is limited, handling takes the back seat here. But 16″ smaller wheels is a concern and have to be careful at poor road conditions. Instrumentation is not attractive and it lacks some flashy dials. Absence of smart hooks and mobile charging point are clearly visible.

First A1 GP win for India & karthikeyan

narain-india-karthikeyan-india-a1-gp.jpg A1 Team India’s Narain Karthikeyan drove the team’s baby blue and white Lola/Zytec into the record books on Sunday (December 16th) by finishing first in the Feature Race at A1GP Zhuahi, China. The win was the maiden victory for the Indian team in A1GP competition. India thus became the 14th nation to record a win in A1GP. Karthikeyan clocked 1:08’30.759 to finish 0.502 seconds ahead of Kiwi Jonny Reid, who breathed down the former’s neck but could not match the Indian’s experience. Starting third in the grid, Karthikeyan stepped on the gas on lap 16 when Portugal slipped back, allowing India to trail Switzerland. And by lap 22, the gap between the Swiss and Indian car had been whittled down to 4.6 seconds. In lap 26, Neel Jani of Team Switzerland developed a problem with the right rear tyre and had to bring the car into the pits, which allowed Karthikeyan to grab the lead.Recently Narain lost his status as Williams’ test driver. But this win could change the carreer of India’s only F1 driver in a big way. “It proves that I can do well and we can be on level with the best teams,” Karthikeyan said, while attributing the success to combination of all factors including the pit crew. “I am familiar with the next four race circuits. Hopefully we should be doing fine from now on.”he added

Five of the 22 cars were involved in a first lap collision.Australia, Brazil and South Africa tangled at turn four and Lebanon ran off into the gravel, bringing out the safety car for three laps. Malaysia were forced out of the action due to a puncture sustained from running over debris caused by the incident. Switzerland top the overall points table with 79 points, 19 clear of second placed France. India stands at number 10. The championship now takes a five-week break before heading to New Zealand for round five.

Hyundai’s european i10 with diesel engine

Hyundai debuts the new i10 for the European market at the Bologna Motor Show. Hyundai made its world premiere of the i10 in india recently. The i10 that is to be sold in Europe and the Americas is almost identical to the one sold in India. As usual it differs from indian i10 by hosting a set of safety features. To launch in spring are two motors for the i10 available. The 1.1L petrol engine found in indian i10 has an optional automatic transmission for the european market. Hyundai says will top 60mpg average fuel consumption and produce carbon dioxide emissions of 119g/km. That means road tax of £35 and free entry into the London Congestion Charge zone, which could prove key to the i10’s sales target.

A new 1.1L, 3-cylinder CRDi engine with VGT(Variable Geometry turbo) develops 55KW/75bhp capable of reaching a maximum speed of 165km/h will power european i10. According to Hyundai, the the diesel i10 will consume 4.3 liters of diesel per 100km(23kmpl) and it CO2 emissions is 114g/km(less than the stipulated 120g/km). Hyundai will also develop a new 1.2-liter gasoline engine with about 59kW/80hp to power the i10. European i10 is more safer than the indian i10 with four airbags, ABS with EBD and ESP(Electronic Stability Program). The Hyundai i10 will also be covered by a five year, unlimited mileage warranty to provide peace of mind motoring for half a decade.

The German launch will be held from 07 to 09 March 2008 when Hyundai’s Spring Festival. The Hyundai i10 will be on sale in UK on 1st March 2008, pricing expected to start more than £6,500.  i10 is the standard in the colours Electric Red, Crystal White or virtual Yellow.
