ByeBye2007: Year in review – Part 1

We are in the last few days of 2007, which so far has been an excellent year for Indian automobile industry as well as to this blog. We started concentrating fully on Automobile sector from this January and this travel has been an excellent and interesting journey until now. Visitors count to this blog has been increasing substantially over months and readers subscribing to our feed thro’ mail and RSS feed has also reached four digit mark in this span of 12 months. We tried direct advertising and advertising thro’ services like Google and they worked really well. So overall this year becomes one of the unforgettable year for us.

Now as a year end routine, we are here highlighting our best posts that were appreciated by our readers starting from January and this first part will cover the posts for the first three months.

— to be continued

Soon bikes with ABS from TVS

Motorcycle is more safer than cars? seems controversial, TVS tries to make this true. When some of our hatches and sedans doesn’t have ABS, TVS plans to bring ABS – Anti-lock Braking System to motorcycles. Infact only in 2008, Indian government plans to make ABS mandatory for all cars. First of all ABS in simple terms, ABS is to give motorcycles maximal braking effect without wheel lock-up in all-weather emergency situations, especially on slick roads.

abs-bikes.jpgIn 1988 BMW introduced ABS on its motorcycles — a first in the motorcycle industry. TVS which bets on its R&D and has been setting trends in indian two wheeler market will bring this technology to indian market next year. TVS is currently testing the indigenously developed ABS technology on its bikes and scooters. This technology will be introduced possibly in high-end 180 and 200cc apache’s. “Very soon we could have ABS (anti-lock braking system) for the two wheelers as we continue to improve the technology,” Mr Harne, TVS Motor Company Senior Vice-President for R&D said.

What this means to us: Soon the concept of safer biking will blossom in the Indian two-wheeler market.

Honda plans to make CR-V in India

Honda Siel Cars India is exploring the option of manufacturing the CR-V in India. Currently,Honda is directly importing the CR-V’s from Japan as a completely built unit (CBU) and this escalates the price to Rs20lakh(as CBU attracts 114% import duty). CR-V has been the market leader in its segment since its debut. On an average, about 300 units of the CR-V are retailed every month. But as this segment is hotting up, many manufacturers intend to roll out new models next year. Chevrolet Captiva, Mitsubishi Outlander and Hyundai Santa Fe will positioned against CR-V. If Honda’s plan comes true, you may buy CR-V in 2008 or 2009 for Rs 12-14 lakhs or instead of merely going in for price cuts, Honda may add features that would entice buyers.  “We are studying the possibilities of producing the CR-V locally, which will help us become a far more active player in the growing SUV market”,Masahiro Takedagawa,  president and CEO of HSCI, told.  Last month we reported you , Honda may replace the 2.2L engine with its popular 2.0L engine to take on the Maruti Suzuki’s vitara. Honda is packing CR-V to take on the competition.

Bajaj to revive scooters

Nearly after 10 years, Bajaj auto wants to ride scooters again. Why now? the reason is simple, while the overall two wheelers sales were down by 10% in 2007, scooter market is growing in double digits.  Before 10 years scooters dominate the two wheeler market in India. For the first time in 1997, motorcycles overtook the scooter sales and there after scooters never soared. The mileage conscious indian customers opted for fuel efficient motorcycles more than scooters. But this seems to be changing now, As India progresses, we believe that scooters, which account for about 25% of the market today, will one day make up for 70% of all two-wheelers in the country,” said Ajinkya Firodia, senior vice-president, sales and marketing, Kinetic Motor. His words have to believed if we look at the following figures

Out of the 6 million two wheeler market around 1 million scooters were sold in 2007. This year alone three new scooters entered the market which started with Bajaj’s kristal, Kinetic SYM flyte and Suzuki Access. For the 2008 market leader Honda has already announced it will introduce a premium scooter by the end of February. Kinetic and TVS have also promised new products in 2008. Obviously, Bajaj wants a pie in this booming market. Infact it has its right to do so, when Bajaj switched the lane to chase Hero Honda, Bajaj had close to 80 per cent share of the scooters and scooterette business in the country. Currently, Honda is the market leader in the scooter segment with more than 50% market share. Honda’s scooter line-up includes dio, eterno and activa. Bajaj made a comeback with 100cc kristal scooter but it failed to make a ripple. This time Bajaj Auto  is very serious, it is planning a series of steps, including setting up dedicated showrooms for scooter-buyers on the lines of its ‘Probiking’ showrooms. Probiking is a series of branded, exclusive showrooms for Bajaj Motorcycles that offer an exclusive sales and service experience to prospective buyers. These would display and sell new models in the scooter segment, currently in the pipeline. It is important to recall, Bajaj showcased a 150cc scooter named Blade at the 2006 auto expo. We also reported you Bajaj auto is working on LPG/CNG variant of chetak scooter. Will the second innings work for Bajaj? let’s wait

Ford to make engines in India

Following Hyundai and GM, Ford has started building a new engine-making facility in India, which will make 300,000 petrol and diesel engines. However, the the ratio of diesel to petrol Ford going to produce here is not yet revealed. Ford will use these engines to cater to the needs of not just India but also to the entire Asia-Pacific region and the European market. Ford India currently sells Ikon, Fusion and Fiesta in India for which it buys its petrol engines from the Rs570-crore Avtec Ltd, a GP-CK Birla group company. Also, it assembles the Endeavour SUV for which it imports engine from Europe.

Diesel to cost 25 paise more in Delhi

Delhi Cabinet on December 24th decided to levy an environment cess of 25 paise per litre on diesel. It has also decided to set up an Environment Cess Fund to help bring in a “clean air” policy. After the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the Capital’s ambient air quality had been a major concern for people and therefore efforts for controlling air pollution from vehicular emissions were being streamlined. A notification in this regard is expected soon. Arguing that the price for a litre of diesel was the lowest in Delhi, Ms. Dikshit said the Cabinet had also decided to request the Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry for introduction of 50 ppm sulphur diesel in the National Capital Region by 2008-09. It has also decided to commission an adequate number of Pollution Under Control centres at all the 19 border points to prevent entry of polluting vehicles into the Capital.Besides, a financial package to encourage replacement of diesel-driven goods vehicles plying on local permits by new vehicles plying on CNG was also discussed by the Cabinet. The financial incentive under the plan could be in the form a direct subsidy on the capital cost of the vehicle and reimbursement of an amount equivalent to VAT.The decision to impose the cess on diesel comes hot on the heels of a report by the Centre for Science and Environment warning that even Euro I and II diesel cars spew several times more toxics than their petrol versions. It had added that Euro-III diesel cars emit 7.5 times more toxic particulate matter compared to petrol cars. The CSE had based its study on actual emissions data available from Automotive Research Association of India. Stating that one diesel car is equal to 7.5 petrol cars in terms of particulate matter and three petrol cars in terms of nitrogen oxide emissions, it had stated that air toxics from a diesel car were also harmful and carcinogenic.

Mahindra Scorpio to hit UK roads

Indian brands in UK

Tata Motors outbids the Mahindra & Mahindra in Ford’s Land Rover sale, but it seems that this does not make any impact on Mahindra’s global ambition. Mahindra has already announced it will foray into american market soon and it is already selling scorpio in Italy,France, spain (sold as Mahindra Goa) and in most africa and latin american countries. Now mahindra want to sell scorpios to United Kingdom the country which ruled india for almost 150 years. But Mahindra is not the only manufacturer eyeing european market, India’s first passenger car maker has already announced it will again launch its entire range in UK market. It is already working on hybrid indica specifically european market like UK where emission norms are tougher. Few years back, Tata Motors sold its popular hatchback Indica in UK market in alliance with MG rover between. But it stopped selling indica’s on account of poor sales. India’s only electric car manufacturer Reva’s G-Wiz is one of the top selling electric car in UK.

Launch and the dealer network

Mahindra plans to launch the Scorpio SUV in Britain next summer, along with two versions of a Scorpio pickup truck, and claims it is close to sealing a deal with the IM Group, distributor of Subaru, Isuzu and Daihatsu vehicles in the UK, which would allow it to sell through IM’s British dealership network. IM is remaining tight-lipped about the deal, saying only that talks are in progress, but Mahindra says it hopes to sell 2,000 vehicles annually in the first two years and already has plans to launch further SUV-style cars in the UK as soon as possible.

But Mahindra has to sell scorpio’s against much superiors range rovers which are leap ahead of scorpio in styling, engineering, performance and safety. But Mahindra hopes increasing trend of hating gas guzzlers will help scorpio in a big way. Ya, mahindra is betting on scorpio’s superior fuel efficiency and its bargain-basement price tag. Scorpio will be priced around £13,000 in UK, making it by far the cheapest large SUV on the market and the least expensive seven-seater. This means scorpio is cheaper by almost £10,000 than Hyundai’s santa Fe(one of the top selling SUV in UK). “The price is our USP [unique selling point],” says Pawan Goenka, president of Mahindra’s automotive sector. “We have the lowest-priced comparable vehicle in all the markets we’re in, and hopefully we give good value to the customer.”

Image conscious:

Earlier in 2007, Anand Mahindra, the company’s vice-chairman and managing director, told “We want to be the next Land Rover. Why can’t an Indian company be the next Land Rover?” If Mahindra is really serious about this, it i going to be tough battle for the company, Mahindra has to bulldoze huge barricades. It has to revamp (not to produce) the image of the asian manufacturers in the eyes of europeans. Since, most of the europeans think asian cars are unreliable and copycats. Jeremy Clarkson (popularly known as JC) of TopGear once described Tata Indica as one of the worst cars, he ever driven. Infact they initially hesitated to accept Honda’s and Toyota’s. Goenka acknowledges the company will need to work hard to win over British buyers. “Clearly with any new market we have to overcome image problems,” he concedes. “But slowly Mahindra is establishing its brand, and Mahindra is not a new company: we have been in business for more than 60 years and we hope that people will have confidence in our quality.”

CO2 and crash test

Another big challenge is complying the strigent euopean safety and emission norms. Since unlike asians, European consumers used to make note of crash test figures when they look for cars. Also, you cannot be pollutive in europe since this may escalate the running cost of the vehicle for the owner which in turn means people keep away the polluters. Especially with Euro V round the corner (in 2008) and Euro VI in 2013 it is going to be a uphill task for Mahindra. Mahindra claims the Scorpio will meet the obligatory “type approval” safety criteria for mass-produced cars in Europe and has the potential to send a shockwave through the industry, undercutting more established brands and making it even harder for hard-pressed European manufacturers to compete. So far, Mahindra has not releases CO2 emissions figure for the Scorpio, it says, “Scoprio is in line with other diesel vehicles in this weight class sold in western Europe.”

About Mahindra:

Mahindra started out in 1945, assembled American Willys Jeeps under licence from 1949, and today is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of tractors. Mahindra is the fourth largest vehicle seller in india. Mahindra first forayed into the Britain in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It sold rebadged Jeeps, including the Indian Chief.

About Scorpio:

Scorpio is one of the largest selling SUVs in India clocking sales around 6000 units a month.
Mahindra recently strapped a new 2.2 litre diesel engine under the hood of the scorpio and christened it as ‘Scorpio m_Hawk’. Mahindra will bring this version of scorpio to the UK. Scorpio m_Hawk produces 120bhp at 4000 rpm and it capable reaching a top speed of 100mph. It develops 206 lb-ft of torque in a wide range of 1600 – 2800rpm. Fuel efficiency in the combined cycle is 27mpg.

LPG to power Ambassador soon

Amby LPG:

Hindustan Motors is planning to launch Ambassador with sequential liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) injection system within three months. The new Amby will give the owner the choice of either using LPG or petrol for fuel. The LPG injection systems are a widely used form of technology and the company would not have to make any significant investments in upgrading its existing platform, said  Moloy Chowdhury, executive vice president, Hindustan Motors. The demand for vehicles with alternative fuel technology was on the rise for both economic and environmental reasons, and the production and marketing of the new car would be shaped by market demands, he said. The LPG amby would be priced slightly higher than the existing models.

HM currently produces over 1,000 units of Ambassador cars at its Uttarpara facility near Kolkata running at one-third its full capacity. This was primarily because of lack of demand, admitted Chowdhury. The company targets to sell around 12,500 units by the end of this fiscal.

A/C amby to ply on Kolkata roads:

Hindustan Motos today launched the Ambassador air-conditioned(AC) meter taxis in Kolkata in response to users’ requirements. A section of the passengers were felt to be looking for AC comfort within an affordable range, said Chowdhury. The state transport department has issued permits for 300 such taxis. The city will have a separate counter for AC taxis at the airport and railway stations soon. Currently, around 20,000 non-AC taxis ply in Kolkata. The first batch of taxis will be priced at Rs 3.79 lakh ex-showroom as against the non-AC taxi price of Rs 3.6 lakh. The fare will be 25% more than the non-AC taxi fare. The car is expected to give a mileage of 14- 16 kilometers per litre on city roads, Chowdhury said. The AC taxis conformed to BS III emission norms

Vahan show: Interview with Mr.Abhijit Bose, Induselectrans

For the second part of our Vahan show, an exclusive show in our blog in which we give video reviews of cars, bikes and interviews with famous auto personalities. In this show, we chatted with Mr. Abhijit Bose, General Manager (Business development) of Induselectrans. In the chat, he spoke about IndusElectrans and their products and shared his thoughts on the potential for Electric vehicles in India and clarified some common issues/misconceptions which lives among the people about the ebikes – on its mileage, charging and service. The 13 min long video is available in 3 parts but unfortunately audio quality is little bit poor due to the external noises. For the convenience of our readers, we provide the text transcripts of the entire 3 parts of the videos below the post. Watch the interview and as usual do share your comments.

 Part – 3
Interview with Abhijit Bose
Vahan: Thank you Mr Abhijit for giving us thoughts on Electric vehicles in india.

Abhijit: thanks

Vahan: Could you tell us a little about Induselectrans

Abhijit: IndusElectrans is a division of Electrotherm India. Electrotherm is a public listed company with a turnover of Rs. 760crores. Electrotherm used to make and still now we are the leader. We have gained core competence in electronics and electrical technology. Over a period of time, we have given a thought, how to come up with a new kind of product which is related to our competence as well as it ease out the problem of mass consumption. We looked at hybrid/electric bus which is still on our R&D and we looking at commercialization in a year or two. Later we looked at two-wheeler market very closely, we seen the international market and in Europe & America there are lot of demand for these kind of two-wheeler vehicles. Incidentally in china there is huge market for these vehicles. But when we looked at the vehicles running in southeast asia these are not suitable for India, we have to indigenise, re-engineer, re-design and re-specify the complete components. We did so, after 5 years of intensive research we came out with first six models – yo smart, yo spin – 250W models and then yo trust, yo trend, yo teen and yo tuff – cycle models. We used to call them as B-size models and smart and spin are called as A-size models. We have sold around 30,000 ebikes mostly yo smart in the financial year of 2006-2007. While walking on yo spin and yo smart, we have appointed across the country of 200 dealers and sub-dealers, we found that there are lot of requirement for high speed vehicle because yo smart and yo spin can reach maximum speed of only 25km/hr, so we lost lot of customers and real customers for the yo smart & yo spin are housewives, school children, retired people and self employed people like LIC agents. But we couldn’t get a walking men with our size of bikes. We decided to launch a new product called yo speed 750W i.e with a 750 Watts very powerful motor and backed up by much more powerful battery of Ampere-Hour of 33 to ensure that 750W motor can take care of 2 people and deliver a high speed of 45km/hr. Currently, we are working on auto rickshaws and on various other transportations systems. As of now, we are having 7 products with 70% market share at all india level.

Vahan: How much did you see the potential for ebikes in Indian two-wheeler market, when you brought the bikes here

Abhijit: The potential is very huge, so far licensed and registration version of fuel vehicles are used by walking men and walking women and other categories who does not qualify for license are restricted to bicycles. So we have created a new segment by bringing yo smart and yo spin into the market. If you look at electrical vehicle as a category, probably in india this is only the 2nd time someone has built a new category, before that, i think… only kellogg’s created a category for make first indians. We created a category and we redefined the usage of a two-wheeler which is running on alternative energy. It takes time to settle on, for this kind of concept as there are lots of apprehension initially found with the customers. But over a period of time, last two years we are in the market and we are the first company with a national reach and we found that those apprehensions are now wading out because of , initially there are apprehension such as how long the battery will last? what will happen if there is a rain? whether it can pass through a water logged streets? those apprehensions are gone..as these are time tested and we sold huge volumes and as there 11/2 year old vehicle.

If you look at industry as whole, automobile industry is walking on three things – cash purchase, financing and exchange. if you look at cash purchase it is easier you are selling these ebikes at Rs30000 and people are buying it. But when a financier comes, GE and ICICI have both joined hands with us, obviously there is some importance to these as a category. They have financed the product the like yo smart in a unprecedented way. So obviously they have done extensive research on whether this category will go or not, obviously they have seen our growth month-on-month and infact they have given lot of inputs to us also as they have gone for financing the customers. The customer profile is very important for you to be called as good customer bike.

Vahan: How much volumes you expect in next few years?

Abhijit: Over a period of time. we expect around market to mature to 10 – 15 lakh but we can be there as a market leader with a 40% market share

Vahan: in another 2 to 3 years…

Abhijit: it will take another five years

Vahan: When people think about ebikes suddenly china! pop-up in their mind. How do you ensure the quality and availability of spare parts?

Abhijit: yes we are importing some parts from china, but we have a satellite plant in china, it is our company. So we are manufacturing, we are controlling the quality, we specify those and we have put the best experts, so it is not actually importing from china, through these we cut down cost that is passed on to the customer. That’s it.

Vahan: like scrutinizing..

Abhijit: it is ours company providing good back-end and we have good competence in electrical technology so we understand things better. Also ,we have re-engineered the whole thing, we have re-engineered the complete design,we re-engineered the complete design and we re-specify the battery. Also, we have found that the vendors are not that strong and so we made our own charger, own controller ..everything ..thats the thing the indigenisation we have to do. We have to build our vendors over a period of time initially they are struggling but we have to build in a period of 6-7 months. Today dunlop is supplying the tyres.

Vahan: but considering the price, ebikes are priced almost equivalent to their petrol peers

Abhijit: yes, but you have look at the economy, you will get your money back in three years time.

Vahan: What is the mileage of your products?

Abhijit: a single rider of with this kind of bike you can go up to 70kms, a dozen ride up to 50km in a single charge. How much we travel everyday, on an average we won’t travel more than that except for some people who travel 70/80km a day.

Vahan: We have received lot of enquiries on who need registration and license to ride an ebike, could you throw some light on regulations..

Abhijit: The motor vehicle act called CMVR that specifies bikes with less than 25km/hr of maximum speed and produces less than 250W won’t require license. So yo speed 750W is a fully registered vehicle.

Vahan: How about the charging of the vehicle. is it only plug-in type?

Abhijit: yes, just like your mobile charger

Vahan: But, what about people living in 2nd or 3rd floor using the ebikes

Abhijit: We also initially apprehended that would be some problem, but we found that people in gujurat or in delhi or in hyderabad everyone made their own charging point, when you start saving money you also start looking finding solutions. That’s not an issue

Vahan: Another question pops up in everyone mind while looking for ebikes is, what is the life of the battery, how much you have to spend for replacing the battery

Abhijit: For bikes like yo speed, we are providing 1 yr warrantee for the whole vehicle which includes battery. For lead acid batteries the life is not more than 21/2 years and then you have to put another battery. Even then, the cost of running a ebike is 1/8th of a petrol vehicle. Since you have to spend for maintenance but in ebikes there is no need. Because you have only four fundamental parts here – battery, motor and charger. The only mechanical part is the brake, that’s the advantage of an ebike. Then the service, customers can get back the vehicle whether it is first or second or third check which are free roughly in one hour.

Vahan: What about warranty for other products?

Abhijit: For yo smart vehicle warranty is for one year and the battery warranty is up to six months.

Vahan: Do you have any plans to introduce lithium ion batteries which have superior life than existing lead acid batteries?

Abhijit: Lithium ion batteries may come in future but its has to be mass scale commercialization otherwise customers will not be able to pay for it. Also lithium ion is a recent technology but it is costlier but i’m sure that it will come in future.

Vahan: Following you, recently many auto majors have forayed into the segment. TVS has announced an electric vehicle also hero group has entered in a mass manner with ultra motors. How much you expect competition in this segment in the future? What is your plan to tackle this competition.

Abhijit: see.. we are the first mover, we have taken out products across India and to win the competition, that’s giving us a tremendous advantage. Plus we are coming out with more products. Also we have created a powerful brand called yo bykes and it has become generic. Today. everyone is talking about yo bykes and then we are looking better service through our channel partners and to bring different kind of products to differentiate ourself better.
