Budget Impact: Cars and bike to become cheaper

Praise Mr Chindamabaram and feel good, the excise duty cut (lowered to 12 percent from 16 percent) on small cars, buses, motorcycles, scooters and three wheelers will make your beloved machines cheaper. Major manufacturers have already started announcing price cuts on their products.

Small and Hybrid cars:

“We have decided to pass on the benefit of the excise duty cut to customers on three models–Santro, i10 and the Getz– effective April 1,”Hyundai said. The price cut on Santro could be between Rs 12,000 and Rs 14,000, while that on Getz would be between Rs 14,000 and Rs 16,000. Hyundai has decided to cut the prices of the newly launched i10 too. i10 price cut could be between Rs 12,000 and Rs 16,000. General Motors is also cutting he price of its small cars Spark and Aveo U-VA. “We will be cutting the prices of our small cars between Rs 7,500 and Rs 14,000,” GM India Vice-President P Balendran said. Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors might announce a similar price cut soon .

Two & Three wheelers:

Two wheeler manufacturers which have been sever slump in sales will finally get a relief through the duty cut. “The market had been wanting this to arrest the slide in demand in recent months,” Munjal said. “The tax proposals unveiled in the budget will put more money into the hands of people and that will definitely kick-start demand again.” “Hero Honda will consider reducing prices and pass on some benefits,” Managing Director Pawan Munjal said.

Niraj Bajaj, director of India’s leading two wheeler manufacturer Bajaj Auto Ltd, said: “It was really heartening to hear the union finance minister announcing the slash in excise as this will result not only in bringing down prices but also in boosting the sagging sales of two-wheelers.”

Buses and trucks:

According to K. Sridharan, executive director of Ashok Leyland, “The budget is good for the auto industry. The excise duty reduction will be passed on to the customers.”

Auto Components :

“The cut in excise duty for cars, buses and two-wheelers is the only positive for the auto component sector as it can boost our volumes, through not essentially our margins as auto companies may pass the savings to customers. Anyhow, volume is critical now.”

Overall the budget is good for Auto Industry not just because of duty cut but also they will benefit indirectly from these please all budget. Increase in Income Tax limit and will bring enough liquidity and which in turn will increase the buying ability of the consumers.

Stock market response:

After a long time auto sector Index managed to end in green with Maruti Suzuki (3.9%), Hero Honda (2.3%), Ashok Leyland (4.2%), Bajaj Auto (2.75%) and Mahindra & Mahindra (1.9%). However, Tata Motors ended with a sharp loss of 1.4%.

Update: Mr Arvind Mathew President and Managing Director, Ford India view on 2008 budget.

A mixed bag for the Auto Industry. Despite long requesting for the rationalisation of the excise duties on the various segments, but it was disappointing to see that our request on uniform excise tax has been neglected for yet another year. Reducing the excise duty on the small cars alone has actually widened the gap between small and other car segments. The excise duty on the mid-size car now stands at 24%, double that of a small car, which is disappointing for the customers of mid-size and larger cars. Though reduction in corporate taxes and customs duties, which automobile industry were eagerly been awaiting for, is another miss in the budget. But reduction in customs duties for project imports will benefit us and is a welcome step, especially in light of Ford India’s recent expansion and growth plans. There have been no significant investments made for improving roads, ports, etc, other than focus on the power sector. This budget primarily focuses on social sectors, health and education. On an overall positive side, the budget offers significant income tax exemptions to the salaried, which will help put more disposable income in the hands of consumers.  This will result in the growth of consumer spending, and may benefit the auto sector. To compete with the global economies, India needs a lot attention towards infrastructure.

Budget Live: Two wheelers, small and hybrid cars gets cheaper

Finance Minister P Chidambaram has reduced the customs duty on small and hybrid cars. The excise duty on small cars has been reduced to 12 per cent from 16 per cent and hybrid cars to 14 per cent from 24 percent. Excise duty exemption on two-three wheelers reduced from 16 pc to 12 pc.

Santro for women

Hyundai plans to offer a discount of Rs 14,000 on santro’s automatic transmission (AT) model for its women customers in celebration of the International Women’s Day on March 8 and women’s week starting from March 1. Hyundai also plans to lure women customers through reduced finance schemes in collaboration with Axis Bank Ltd by offering a 0.75 per cent discount on interest rate and reduction in loan processing fee by 50 per cent.

The fairing features a slant nose front profile for aerodynamic streamlining, with engine revealing side cut outs. Embedded between the large fairings is the muscular tank. yamaha_yzf_r15_19.jpgyamaha_yzf_r15_13.jpg

4) Yamaha YZF R15 150cc: Deltabox design is known to be one of the lightest and best-handling frame designs in the supersport category, and its use on the new YZF R15 150cc underlines Yamaha’s total commitment to come back strongly into the Indian bike market.

Yamaha has been refining the deltabox design for more than 10 years to bring out the best from steel and aluminium. This frame is very rigid or stiff at the head pipe, engine mounts and swingarm pivot point. In other areas, material has been carefully removed to allow “tuned flex”. In addition the engine is a fully stressed chassis member to maximize handling. YZF R15 will be the second bike to come with mono suspension after Honda’s Unicorn in India. Complementing the race-bred Deltabox frame is a cast aluminium swinging arm. By keeping unsprung weight low, this high quality swinging arm allows the linked type Monocross suspension system to operate more efficiently and deliver more responsive handling qualities. Suspension at the front and the rear have been tuned to provide maximum lean angle. To control this high performance machine, the fierce bite comes from large disc brakes at the front and the rear. R15 has a minimum ground clearance of 160mm.

5) Yamaha YZF R15 150cc: The area which might not excite you like the handling and performance characteristics of YZF R15 might its features. Credits to the Bajaj and TVS, both of these manufacturers have already brought in lot of exciting features to the Indian market.

Beneath the large triangular visor is an instrument panel featuring a digital cluster and a large analogue rpm meter which shows the stratospheric 12000 rpm red limit. Handle bar controls are standard. Though Yamaha offers split grab rails, YZF R15 misses the LED tail lamp.

yamaha_yzf_r15_22.jpgyamaha_yzf_r15_12.jpg

6) Yamaha YZF R15 150cc: Yamaha’s YZF R15 is sure to set new standards for performance in the literbike class with a combination of a sick motor and track-inspired good looks. But the use of advanced technologies in this motorcycle has shot up the price considerably. Yamaha might demand a 50% premium over the existing 150cc products – pulsar, apache, hunk and unicorn. YZF R15 150cc is likely to be priced around Rs1 lakh. Yamaha is back, all you have to do is start saving big bucks to buy this beast. From mid 2008 YZF R15 will start fighting with the Bajaj Pulsar 220cc and Hero Honda Karizma for the crown and the hearts.

1) Yamaha YZF R15 150cc: While the R1 is inspired from M1, Yamaha’s YZF R15 is developed to imitate R1 in every aspect. Yes, you can expect the exceptional motorcycling experience in the R15. 2) Yamaha YZF R15 150cc: Hurrah! we are going to touch the heart. The 150cc engine which powers the YZF R15 is the India’s first 150cc liquid cooled engine. Yamaha has brought lot of advanced technologies which are usually used in higher displacement engines for this 150cc mill. Here are few highlights of YZF R15’s hi-tech engine.

YZF R15 makes use of DiASil (Die-casting Aluminum-Silicon) cylinder. The DiASil Cylinder is an all-aluminum cylinder made possible by an exclusive Yamaha aluminum forging technology. Because it uses a 20% silicon aluminum alloy, it is possible to create a cylinder wall that is so hard and durable that it eliminates the need for a conventional steel cylinder sleeve. And, because the cylinder is all aluminum, it has excellent heat dissipation qualities (cooling capacity is improved by 60% and reduces engine weight (by 30%) at the same time.

YZF R15 makes use of forged piston (India’s first) which enables lighter piston design and excellent power developement.

YZF R15’s 4-valve combustion chamber adopts centrally mounted spark plug and six hole type injector which leads to path breaking performance.

A compact radiator cools the engine to maximize stablity and performance.

3) Yamaha YZF R15 150cc: Similar to the R1, Yamaha has adopted a six speed transmission for its new 150cc YZF R15. Optimized ratios will help you to keep the motor singing in the high-rpm range throughout all the gears.

4) Yamaha YZF R15 150cc: Here are the dimensions of the demon. YZF R15 must be the most compact bike in its class. It’s overall length is 1070mm, overall width is 670mm and its wheels base is 1290mm. Since sporty YZF R15 is shorter too and its height is just 1070mm. YZF R15 150cc features F 80/90 -17 inches tyres in the front and 100/80-17 inches tyres in the rear. Both the tyres are tubeless.

Skoda Fabia Pictorial Review – Interiors

1) Skoda Fabia: Because of the taller roof line you can easily walk in and out of the Fabia. Living inside the fabia is a pure exhilaration. The quality of materials used are top notch and dual tone dashboard is sure to attract to everyone.

skoda_fabia_18.jpg

2) Skoda Fabia: Driving the Fabia is absolute pleasure not just because of precise gearbox. The front seats are wider, with generous legroom. Seat height is adjustable. Pumping the lever you are lifted to upper floor from downstairs. Also, you can adjust both the reach and height of the steering wheel.

skoda_fabia_40.jpg

3) Skoda Fabia: If you had to reduce the Fabia to one winning factor, it would undoubtedly be the sheer spaciousness of the car. The roomy interior make you feel more like a sedan than a hatch. Storage spaces are abudant. Side pockets on both front doors are also generous and large, and will hold just about anything, from street directory to maps, from parking coupon booklets to your foldable sun shade. A cup holder is provided for the rear passengers.

skoda_fabia_38.jpgskoda_fabia_31.jpgskoda_fabia_32.jpg

4) Skoda Fabia: But you cannot check all the boxes with your eyes closed. Fabia has its own weakness. Seats are rigid and the result is a very stiff ride though the vibrations transferred is little due to the sift suspension. Getting into the rear seats you will feel like you are thrown into a bunker. Claustrophobic feel is further enhanced by the gun-slit windows and the rear windshield which is too small and far away from the passenger. But unlike the swift you won’t feel cramped inside the Fabia as there are generous legroom and knee room. Three adults can sit comfortably in the rear seats.

skoda_fabia_20.jpg

5) Skoda Fabia: Fabia’s long list of equipment includes – an auxiliary point to plug-in your iPod, MP3 audio system, head restraints for rear passengers, powered mirrors and electric sunroof. The roof mounted A/C  chills the cabin quicker.

skoda_fabia_52.jpgskoda_fabia_28.jpgskoda_fabia_54.jpg

6) Skoda Fabia: The cabin is not free from noise, the diesel clatter can be heard when the windows are shut. Starting the engine in monsoon could be more noisy. Reduction of sound proof materials might be the cause

skoda_fabia_50.jpg

7) Skoda Fabia: is an extreme safe place to live in with ABS, dual front air bags, parking sensors,MSR and Dual Rate Brake Assist. Skoda’s rock solid built must also be taken into account.

skoda_fabia_37.jpg

8) Skoda Fabia: is available in four variants. The diesel range of Fabia starts from Rs7,22,563 and goes upto Rs8,71,556. Top of the line Fabia’s petrol Elegance variant comes at Rs7,72,918.All the prices indicated are ex-showroom Chennai.

skoda_fabia_44.jpg

Interestingly premium hatchbacks is not new to Indian customers. Ford and Hyundai earlier made an attempt to lure swift buyers through their Fusion and Getz Diesel but failed to made any impact. The failure is partly attributed primarily due to the timing of the launch. Indian customers never looked beyond Maruti Suzuki’s swift. Things has not changed much after that except for the increase in waiting period to get the swift. Then where does Skoda’s new Fabia slots in? those who love spacious yet compact one. Fabia is more spacious even more than some sedans available in the market. Also you cannot find such an economical car in the market. All you have to do save some more money to buy this hatch.

Skoda Fabia Pictorial Review – Exteriors

Similar to the European market, Indian market will soon see more premium hatchbacks. Soon you can pick a hatchback from Rs1lakh nano to Rs20lakh mini. The B+ (or) premium hatchback is all set evolve in India with the introduction Skoda’s new Fabia. Skoda which is known as for its octavia’s and laura’s plans to bring the larger hatch lovers into its foothold.

Skoda always price its products at a premium over others but even after paying a premium, Skoda’s customers feels good since they are getting the best. JD power 2007 Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) which ranks Skoda in top position is a testimony for that. We check out whether Skoda can keep this alive with the new Fabia and whether its success formula (better product at a higher price) can go well with the price conscious hatchback consumers? let’s check out!

1) Skoda Fabia: Skoda Fabia is finally here. Fabia is one of the very few cars for which Indian customers has waited for so long.

skoda_fabia_6.jpg

2) Skoda Fabia: Unlike other Skoda’s, Fabia is stylish and awe inspiring to look at. The large headlamps, smiley grille makes the front fascia eye catching. Side profile is accentuated by spruced up bumpers and the strong waist line which runs along the length of the car. The rear styling of the Fabia emphasises the impression of a roomy and a generously proportioned car. Altogether, though the design is eye pleasing it fails to excite since we come across more swift’s every day.

skoda_fabia_5.jpg

3) Skoda Fabia: Fabia is offered in two engine options. The 1.4L petrol engine generates 85bhp of maximum power and 132Nm of maximum torque. The 1.4L diesel engine pumps out 69bhp of maximum power and 155Nm of maximum torque. As Skoda is known for making very good oil burners, we picked an oil burner for our test drive. Don’t expect this mill to pump your adrenaline faster like the swift or the Getz but expect for a economical diesel. Fabia returns an awesome mileage of 15kmpl in the city. Apart from the frugal diesel, gearbox is another strong point for the Fabia case. It is precise and slots in perfectly. Fabia reaches the 60km/hr from stand zero in 6seconds.

skoda_fabia_45.jpg

4) Skoda Fabia: Steering is sharp and the response is very good. The electric steering is assisted by a special hydraulic system makes zig-zag easy in the city traffic. Steering and transmission package makes the Fabia ideal for driving in the city.

skoda_fabia_36.jpg

5) Skoda Fabia: The Fabia impresses very much on the open road where its solid built and robust suspension will come to the fore with a drive that is both confidence-inspiring and safe. Surpisingly its solid suspension also filters the potholes well.

skoda_fabia_9.jpg

6) Skoda Fabia: With its external measurements (3992 mm x 1642 mm x 1513 mm) the new skoda Fabia hatchback is easily the largest in its class. The boot has a basic capacity of 300 litres, and, when the rear seats are folded down, increases to 1163 litres. These large dimensions have no impact maneuverability of Fabia. Skoda has equipped the Fabia with features like reverse parking sensors.

skoda_fabia_48.jpg

7) Skoda Fabia: Sunroof which has suddenly becomes fashion norm among consumers is fitted top of the line elegance variant. Other likeable features in the Fabia are projector headlamps, fog lamps, remote locking, powered mirrors, alloy wheels and smart parcel shelfs.

skoda_fabia_15.jpg

8) Skoda Fabia: Fabia is available in four variants -active, classic, ambiente and elegance. Active being the low end and elegance being the top. Skoda’s Fabia is available in as many as six colours – Corrida Red,Satin Grey,Brilliant Silver,Magic Black,Candy White and Cappuccino beige.

Proton to sell Saga and Persona in India

Saga and Persona

Proton which has been mulling its foray into India will launch the Saga and Persona soon in the market. Proton’s Indian entry is a follow-up after the recent success it made in Iran, China, Indonesia and Thailand. ” Proton plans to finalise its export strategy to India in the first half of this year” said Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir Managind Director,Proton. He added the strategy would be similar to the one in China where Proton worked with local partners to set up manufacturing and distribution facilities for Proton cars.“We are looking for partners with experience in the manufacture and distribution of vehicles, besides having car design capabilities and localisation,” he told. Syed Zainal added that Proton was looking for parties in the auto industry in India that would complement it. “The parties involved would get our products to use, sell and fill up capacity,” he said, adding that the Indian market was expanding due to a big boost in demand for cars. We earlier reported you that India’s ICML (maker of Rhino MUV) is in talks with Proton. In 2009, you may come across saga with ICML badge.

Proton’s 2nd coming:

proton_logo.jpgProton has been building cars since the 1980s, and sold about 150,000 in 2005 before experiencing a slump in 2006. Most of its sales are domestic although it also exports to countries mostly in the Middle East and Asia. The state-owned (Malyasia) carmaker has been in talks with Germany’s Volkswagen AG and General Motors Corp. of the U.S. about a possible alliance to turn around its fortunes..Proton has a capacity to make 3,00,000 cars with an additional 40,000 units capacity at its Indonesian plant. It exported 28,000 units to the Middle-East, UK, South Africa, Australia and the ASEAN bloc. Proton already has a presence in India through its subsidiary, the UK-based Lotus Engineering, which operates a designing centre at Bangalore. In 1999 Proton announced that it will set up a wholly-owned subsidiary in India to sell its cars. Proton and Hindustan Motors of India also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for assembling Proton cars in Chennai. But the deal never fruitified.
