Yamaha to introduce forged piston in India

Yamaha Motor India is set to introduce forged piston which enables lighter piston design and excellent power development, in the Indian market. The forged piston is used on the new 150cc YZF-R15, which was unveiled at Auto Expo 2008, as the first on an Indian market model and a feature that reduces the reciprocating mass of the piston by approximately 20%.

Introduced in 1997, Yamaha “controlled forging technology” has been used successfully for over a decade for the mass production of forged aluminum pistons because it utilizes a system of precise control of the piece temperature, mold temperature and the forging force. Yamaha’s controlled forging technology tightly controls the forging conditions, including (1) the initial heating of the work piece, (2) controlling the temperature of the mold so that it keeps the work piece in the ideal 400 to 500 ? range (3) applying just the right amount of pressure to the mold in the forging process and many more factors.

According to Mr. Sanjay Tripathi, Head of Dept- Product Planning & Strategy, “Pistons for car and motorcycle engines are usually cast by pouring molten aluminum alloy into a mold. The other type of piston is the forged piston, with which the alloy is not melted but heated to the point where it can be forged into a mold under pressure. Since the aluminum is not melted in the forging process, it retains a stronger metallurgic quality. This makes possible a thinner, and thus lighter, piston that has less reciprocating mass and also contributes to weight reduction. The result is better revving and lesser engine vibrations.”

BMW to source bike components from India

BMW  which sources handle bars and die cast from India for its bikes has now decided to source components for engine and chassis parts. “Already we have been sourcing motorcycle parts such as handle bars and die cast from India. Now we are exploring to source components for engine and chassis parts,” BMW Board Member (international parts sourcing) Herbert Diess said. He said the company, which set up an international purchasing office (IPO) in India between 2006-07, has been running a pilot programme to increase component sourcing from India. “In the past few months we have visited over 100 suppliers and we are still in the monitoring stage for increasing sourcing of car components from India,” Diess said. BMW has started sourcing from India in a small quantity for cars as well, like software parts and has been closely working with vendors such as Mico Bosch and Conti, he added.

no idea of re-entry

Diess said the company was currently not looking at re-entering the Indian bike market after its initial attempts failed. The bike market in Indian being primarily for commuting, and didn’t suit BMW’s products, he added.Earlier in 1997 BMW introduced its F-650 in alliance with Hero group but sales failed to take off even after price was discounted to Rs 1.8 lakh (priced Rs 4.5 lakh when introduced). Soon after that BMW halted its indian two wheeler journey.

Ford Fiesta & Autocar India’s New Mileage Marathon

Autocar India and Ford Fiesta’s Duratorq TDCi have done it again!  The two have partnered to establish yet another record-breaking feat, Bangalore-Mumbai Mileage Marathon on a single tank of fuel. In doing so, they have set a new mileage record of 33.4 km/ litre under real road conditions.  Autocar India’s team of three drivers drove the Ford Fiesta 1.4-litre Duratorq TDCI diesel for a distance of 996.7kms between Bangalore and Mumbai using only 29.8-litres of diesel. The Ford Fiesta used for this Mileage Marathon did not undergo any modifications or changes. The drive was flagged-off from Ford’s dealership Metro Ford in Bangalore on 16th of February 2008. The car’s fuel tank was topped up and sealed at the start. A team of experts from Ernst & Young and Motor Sports Association of India supervised and audited the challenge.  Recording an average speed of 46.5kph, the Fiesta took 24 hours & 20 minutes to cover the distance. The Fiesta encountered different terrain – from the great Golden Quadrilateral, to patches of bad roads, traffic jams and the occasional stray cow! This ensured that the car was driven in real-world traffic conditions.  Scott McCormack, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford India, flagged-in the cars on 17th February, at SC Ford in Mumbai.   ”I am extremely excited that Ford Fiesta is part of this record breaking initiative, more so because this Marathon has been on real Indian road conditions. This is further endorsement of the quality and efficiency of Fiesta’s modern and superior Duratorq TDCi Diesel engine and Ford’s world-class automotive technology. Always known for great performance and handling, Fiesta Diet Diesel boasts of unmatched mileage that can exceed customers’ expectation and benefit them hugely.”

honda_cbf250.jpgIf Yamaha can produce R1 inspired 150cc bike for Indian market, then why cannot Honda. Tata Sumo Grande Interiors – Pictorial Review

Click here to know on-road price, discount and offers of Tata Sumo Grande Mk2 http://www.vicky.in/onroadprice/quote

More than the exteriors, Tata’s objective of building a family MUV can be felt once you get inside the Sumo Grande. Space, space and space is the one word which describes the new Sumo Grande. Plenty of headroom, shoulder room, knee room and storage spaces for all passengers inside the car. This is all possible because of the increased wheelbase (up by 150mm). But similar to the exteriors which has few design flaws, interiors too have some fair bits. Let’s start with that.

1) Tata Sumo Grande: The large four spoke steering wheel, rectangular glove box and generation old gear knob dominates the dash. Dashboard is more upmarket but every thing is squarely placed which makes it look like a pick-up dash. Cubbyholes in the blocky central console provides lots of storage space. Faux wood on central console and on the doors feels good. Cup holders inside the glovebox is a nice touch. The use of poor quality plastics spoils the rich feel.

2) Tata Sumo Grande: Getting behind the large steering wheel is not a boring one. The rake adjustable steering wheel and height adjustable seats makes the driving a pleasant one. Both the driver and passenger seats features lumbar adjust. Controls are easily reachable except for the gear knob which we find it hard to hold on. Instrumentation is simple and the dials are easily readable.

3) Tata Sumo Grande: There are plenty of space under the front seats adding to it is the new reclining second row seats. Roof mounted air conditioner is really a nice feature. Even a third row passenger can adjust the air con vents according to his requirements. Foldable arm rest and head rest gives a luxury feel to the grande. Chat or hear music, the cabin is well insulated from external noise. Best thing you can do in the new sumo grande is occupy the second row seats, recline it, stretch your legs and start dreaming. Seats are comfy and provide good support.

4) Tata Sumo Grande: Similar to other cars in this segment getting into the third row is a muscle burning exercise. But unlike other MUVs, where third row seats are meant only for children three adults can sit comfortably inside the grande. I believe this is the only car available in India to feature full sized third row seats. Butterfly type windows at the rear provides good ventilation for the third row passenger. Second and third row seats can be folded to provide more space. Only few storage spaces are provided at the rear door and the rear door can be opened horizontally.

5) Tata Sumo Grande: Fit and finish has never been the Tata’s strongest selling point, sumo grande is no exception. The flimsy plastics and panel gaps spoils the overall rich nature of the car. Hand grips and plastics at the rear door

tata_sumo_grande_65.jpgtata_sumo_grande_27.jpg

6) Tata Sumo Grande: Top of the line of the line Gx variant features rake adjustable steering wheel, powered mirrors, remote locking, rear wipers and integrated CD player. The Sumo Grande is available in 3 variants – Lx, Ex and Gx — all of which have two seating configurations – 6+1 and 7+1. On the road, the top of the line Sumo Grande Gx 8 seater variant comes at Rs8,36,717 (Chennai).

Verdict:

Sumo in its grande avatar comes with attractive design and sets a new standard in comfort and convenience. The new DICOR is also much more refined and its performance is commendable. But it is not without any flaw, it suffers from the decade old chassis and suspension set up. Also, it is devoid of ABS and airbags similar to the earlier sumos. Pricing is where Tata scores full. This whole package comes at a very attractive price nearly 2lakh rupees less than its rivals which easily makes the sumo grande an attractive buying option.

Europeans to ride Indian made Yamaha bikes

Yamaha to export bikes from India

Yamaha which makes every possible move to revive its Indian operations will soon export bikes from India. Yamaha will begin selling Indian-made motorcycles in Europe as early as next year, President Takashi Kajikawa said. Though Indian market is still a larger market the motorcycle, the sales has been declining and yet it is dominated by 100cc bikes. Hence prominent makers like Bajaj and TVS already making significant amount of money from overseas market.  Many car manufacturers across the world are already using India’s engineering expertise and low cost advantage. Yamaha which is desperate to turn its Indian operation a profitable one will use the same strategy. “We want to turn the Indian operation to profit as soon as possible with the help of exports,” Kajikawa said. “Our top priority is to fill the production capacity.” The company will export motorcycles specifically developed for the Indian market with engine capacity of more than 125-cc, Kajikawa said. Yamaha will use the investment to develop higher-end models in a country where entry-level 100-cc motorcycles are the most popular, Kajikawa said. Yamaha will sell more powerful motorcycles, a shift from its current low-priced line-up. Currently, Yamaha uses 33 percent of its manufacturing capacity in India and hence it has lot of room to produce and sell motorcycles.

Yamaha’s has been posting losses since 2001 and its market share has plunged below 5%. In 2007 Yamaha sold only 120,000 units last year in 6 million market. But it started making serious steps to revive its indian operations, Yamaha said it would invest Rs696 crores over the next three years to increase sales more than five-fold to 650,000 units in 2010. Yamaha recently sold 30% stake to Mitsui of japan and formed a new venture called India Yamaha Motors.
