Tata Nano a brief test drive

I can’t believe my ears when one of our close associates informed me that he got a chance to drive the Tata Nano. He and his team driven the car for few kilometers and following is the test drive report.

Its incredible! but believe it, we driven the world’s most expected small car. Though its a brief drive, we are happy to share our experiences with you. We are happy that vicky.in readers gets the experience first before anyone in the world.

We took the stunner of the Indian Auto Expo & Geneva Motor Show to the road. But unlike a regular test drive’s where journalist spent kilometers and kilometers with the car, we drove the Nano for not more than 3 kilometers. But test driving a Nano is so special and is definitely a memorable drive in our life. Let us proudly present you the world’s first test drive report on Tata’s Nano.

Design and Styling:

Rather than frugal engineering i would prefer smart engineering. No one is going to accept if you are selling a ugly looking product. The cost cutting measures should not be felt by the end consumer. Cost cutting can be in the DNA but it should not be very apparent. When Tata announced its one lakh car project, I expected a car built on Tata Ace platform similar to Tata magic. I believed for the one lakh you can produce only a strip down version of Magic. But when i caught the glimpse of Tata Nano’s after so much nig-nag with the fellow press persons at the Delhi Auto expo. I was spellbound. I said to myself, Tata has done it! Nano is not a half car but a complete car and can be comparable to any other car you come across in the road. There are lot of cost cutting measures has gone into the car but all was not apparent. Nano is cute and it is eye pleasing. There are no cost-saving flat surfaces or flat plane glass on the Nano. When Girish wagh (the brain behind the Nano ) and his team came up with flat front similar to ace, Ratan Tata rejected the design and later Nano was designed with short overhang. Ultra short overhang not only brings the Nano a upmarket look but also improved its safety. Over the wedge shaped bonnet are the attractive headlamp clusters and in between them is the proud Tata badge. The design of the front bumper and fog lamp inserts makes the Nano like a toy car. The lines which starts from the headlamps flows smoothly over the length of the car. Large windshield ensures enough sunlight inside the car. The rear bumper which features a large airdam align with compact vents under the rear doors cools the engine. Stylish vents also increases the aesthetic factor of the nano. Similar to other Tata products Nano features vertical tail lamp cluster. Overall proportion of the Nano is attractive.

Engine and Performance:

Ratan Tata’s dream of convincing scooter and motorcycle buyers to buy Nano can be made real only if Nano is regular car with enough power under the hood. Nobody wants a car that is less than everybody else’s car. Tata has developed an engine on its own. While the a multi-point fuel injection system is developed by Bosch. The Value Motronic version o engine management system (EMS) supplied by Bosch is a stripped down version of popular Bosch’s Motronic system. Nano’s EMS uses only 300 of the Motronic’s 1,000 functions and employs only four sensors in order to reduce the cost. Tata has applied 10 patents for this engine alone. Let’s check out how this low cost performs on the road.

An all-aluminium, twin cylinder 623cc, square mill which produces only 33bhp of maximum power powers the Nano. But contrary to our belief, it never felt underpowered. We were five fully grown adults yet Nano pulled without any struggle. It move past 60kmph without any strain but becomes noisy after that. Nano is fitted with four speed manual gearbox. The gearbox is far from the engine and is operated through cables. The gearbox is precise but it requires sufficient effort to slot in.

As per the sticker mounted on the gear knob, Nano can be pushed to 30kmph in first gear,60kmph in second gear and 90kmph in third gear. The maximum speed is little upwards of 100kmph.

Ride and Handling:

The tall boy design and the rear engined layout are bane of the handling characteristics of the car. Nano combines the both so we cannot expect incredible in its handling. But honestly telling you Nano surpised us, before we tell you the Nano’s on road performance i wish to share the engineering gone into the car to offset the tail- heavy effect. Since the engine, clutch and final drive is located at the rear, the rear axle weighs more than the front. This weight has to be compensated and Porsche did this using advanced electronics and suspension systems. Tata cannot mirror Porsche technologies for Nano the same due to the 1 lakh constraint. Tata has adopted a new way, it has moved few aggregates such as the battery and spare wheel to the front and has adapted stiffer supension system. Nano is not a pure monocoque construction. The chassis features sub-frame and stiffening members for stability. Similar to anyother RR car (rear engine, rear wheel driven car) Nano makes use of all independent suspension. Tata has tuned the McPherson strut in the front axle and makes use of larger tyres(155/65) at the rear to increase the stability.

We put the Nano in a test track where cones are placed apart at a fixed distance (the test where cars zig-zag between cones is called a moose test.) Nano was loaded with five adults and we started swiveling the car between the cones. The body roll is minimal and we never felt nervous even while swiveling the Nano at moderate speeds. But under hard braking Nano tends to oversteer. Nano makes use of drum brakes on all wheels.

The test drive track is flat which means we cannot comment anything on the ride quality of the Nano. The nano variant we put into test drive comes with power windows but there is not power steering. The steering wheel is small and uncomfortable to hold yet Nano negotiates corners at ease. Hence parking and moving in the tight traffic won’t be an issue. Credits to the Nano’s length.

Engineering and Comfort:

The ultra compact car is only 3.1 metres in length. But the tall roofline ensures enough space even for tall riders and getting into the driver’s seat is not a muscle burning exercise. Also since the wheels are pushed to the edges there a plenty of raw space inside the Nano. Similar to Indica, Nano’s selling point is going to be its spaciousness. Even a fat guy can sit leisurely in the co-passenger seat. In-built headrests similar to what we found in Hyundai’s i10 for the front seats offers good support. The cabin is roomy and bright becuase of the large windshied. Quarter glass are nice addition but the ear view mirror is too small. Because of the rear engine, rear wheel drive layout the floor is almost flat and even the middle passenger can sit comfortably. The seats are firm and offers good support. Nano can host three adults comfortably in the rear seat.

As the instrument cluster is moved to centre of the dashboard it frees lots of space. On both the sides of the dash are the nicely carved out storage areas. But the real motive behind this centrally mounted instrument console not in front of the driver is the same dashboard can be used for a left-hand-drive vehicle. Similar handles and mechanisms are used for the left- and right-side doors to reduce cost. There are a lot of such innovations that are low-cost and future-oriented. But the exposed pillars, poor quality plastics and smaller control knobs reminds you the price. There are no rubber mounts on the pedal in our test drive. The rear of the car is welded and access to the motor is only from inside. Fuel filler is under the bonnet.

NVH (Noise,Volatile Vibration and Harshness) has never been better with Indian cars. Since it increases the cost significantly, Indian manufactuers bound to spend little on controlling NVH. Being a one lakh car we were not expecting anything big from Nano. But it produces more noise. To be frank, it’s no different from the regular autorickshaw, the noise level is too high. Get inside the Nano, rise the windows you can still hear the noise. Espescially the rear passengers sitting close to the engine can hear more noise. We pray for better insulation in the actual production model.

Fuel Efficiency:

We cannot comment anything on Nano’s mileage with the 3km short drive.

Spy Pictures:

Ushhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Verdict:

We don’t want to make any conclusion and but we wish this Nano a grand success.

Interview with Mr.Shashank Srivastava Commercial Business Head, Maruti Suzuki

Similar to Suzuki, Maruti don’t want to be known as a small car maker. In 2007, Maruti Suzuki launched SX4 and has already grabbed the leadership position in A3 segment. With the launch of new swift Dzire Maruti wishes to extend its lead in the segment. Though Maruti Suzuki has launched seven new models in last three years, the expectations from India’s largest manufacturer is always high. We spoke with Mr.Shashank Srivastava Commercial Business Head, Maruti Suzuki and he speaks about Maruti’s future products in this interview. He told us that Maruti has no immediate plans to bring Jimny Wagon to India. He also explained the contribution of Indian designers to cars like swift dzire and A-star. He also talks about the Maruti’s innovative marketing schemes like NRI and Panchyat schemes which are doing magic for the carmaker even during tough conditions. Watch the interview.

Ultra decides to go alone in India

end of the marriage:

Hero Group of India and Ultra Motors of UK have agreed to depart ways today. Hero – Ultra which is currently selling ebikes and escooters duo is one of the prominent player in the electric vehicle (EV) segment with 20% market share. In October 2007 Hero Exports Private Limited has entered into a Joint Venture with Ultra Motor Company (UMC) formed a joint venture called Hero Ultra private limited and proposed aggressive plans to make and sell electrc bikes in india. Earlier in October 2006, Hero Cycles Limited had signed a technical collaboration-cum-joint marketing agreement with Ultra Motor Company, to produce and jointly market the current range of ”Hero Electric Ultra Powered” electric two wheelers in India. With the today’s divorce both these agreements are off.

The reason behind the divorce is believed to be difference in aggression level between the partners. “Our vision did not match with that of the Hero Group. We wanted to expand at a much faster pace. The congestion in cities creates a natural market for electric two-wheelers. Now, we have our own plans which is to invest Rs 150 crore over the next three years” Ultra Motor chairman Joe Santana said. Ultra Motors is planning to come up with a electric bike that might challenge the splendours and passions of Hero Honda and that is also seen as the reason behind the rift.  We plan to introduce it in India by the next fiscal. It will be powerful enough to compete with a 100 cc motorcycle or Bajaj Pulsar,” said Bowman CEO Ultra Motors said.

However the duo will continue to offer service support to the existing customers.

Volkswagen lines-up new products for India

Volkswagen may one of the latest entrant in the Indian Car market but the company wants to make its mark in every  segment. Volkswagen will now invest €580 million against the €411 million announced earlier in its Chakan plant. In a month or two Volkswagen will start selling Touareg and Phaeton. In June the much expected Jetta sedan will hit the Indian roads. “We have priced Jetta between Rs 13 lakh and Rs 15 lakh, and it would be assembled at the Aurangabad plant. Two other cars, Phaeton and Touareg, would soon be fully imported,”  Mr Joerg Mueller, President and Managing Director, VW India said. “We are working on additional models, and the very small car is one that is missing at the moment,” Mueller added. Volkswagen first small car the Polo will be rolled out in 2009 and a cheaper small car (built on the UP! platform) will be out in 2012. Answering to the queries on Polo and the new UP Mueller said “We will manufacture the small car Polo at the Chakan plant from 2010, and the car would be priced around Rs 4.35 lakh. The concept car Up, presented at the Delhi Auto Expo in January, is in the process of development. It would be the smallest possible car by Volkswagen, and could be priced around Rs 1.80 lakh.”

Maruti Swift Dzire Interiors – Pictorial Review

1) Maruti Swift Dzire: Except the overall length, which is now 4,160mm the dimensions of the dzire is same as the hatch. But because of the design, the C-pillar loses some weight which results in larger rear door which in turn facilated easy ingress and egress for the rear passengers. Also the interior is now brighter with the larger rear quarter glass.

2) Maruti Swift Dzire: The dash board houses a fully integrated stereo on with steering mounted audio controls. Swift Dzire also features a fully automatic climate control system. The instrument cluster in the DZire has round dials with chrome surrounds and features a white backlight. Multifunctional display at the centre shows the time and the exterior temperature.

3) Maruti Swift Dzire: Swift Dzire’s fit and finish quality is as good as swift hatchback and hence the panel gaps and shut lines are tight. The paint quality is top notch. But the quality of plastics could have been better.

4) Maruti Swift Dzire: Rear seat comfort has been the swift’s only sore point. New swift dzire is no exception as there is no change in wheelbase which means the cramped space at the rear remains. Maruti has retuned the spring ratings for the swift dzire but the ride remains stiff. Also, Maruti has made the rear backrest wider and reclined it by a little bit for more comfort. But this new setup has not made any significant difference in ride quality.

5) Maruti Swift Dzire: Similar to the swift driving the car is a pleasure. Steering mounted controls, eye pleasing instrument cluster and Automatic Climate Control makes the driver seat more comfortable place.

6) Maruti Swift Dzire: Before you running out of patience, let’s open the boot. Boot space is a healthy 440litres but it is not completely converted into usable space. due to the intrusions.

7) Maruti Swift Dzire: comes in three variants with two engine options. Zxi is the top end variant in diesel and Zdi is the top end variant in petrol. Maruti has again come with a killer price. On the road the petrol range starts from Rs4,69,117 which goes upto Rs6,24,430. Base end variant of Dzire diesel comes at Rs5,66,977.

verdict:

practicality vs style

Everything remains the same but what you get from swift dzire over the swift is the 440 litres of luggage space which is almost double the size of the boot of the swift hatch. But this does not come without any compromise, the addition of the boot dilutes the swift aggressive stance. The verdict is simple if you want a practical car and if you can stretch your budget by Rs50000 then go for the swift dzire.

But more than the verdict we want answers for two questions – whether the dzire sedan lives upto the value of swift brand and whether it can pull the crowds as the esteem did. Yes, looking at the killer price and with Maruti Suzuki’s badge swift dzire is sure set the sales chart soar but it needs more to live upto the value of brand swift. Maruti has already sold 5658 units in just 17 days.

Maruti Swift Dzire Exteriors – Pictorial Review

Maruti Suzuki may be perceived as small car maker but the success of esteem is unquestionable. Esteem was introduced in 1994 to replace the M1000 Maruti’s first ever sedan on Indian roads. Esteem was acknowledged as a car that required low maintenance and managed low running costs. Esteem topped its category in the J D Power Initial Quality Study 2004. Also, Esteem was ranked first in their categories in the J D Power APEAL Study Many buyers willingly chose the esteem for its easy handling and ride quality. Esteem ruled the entry level sedan market for many years and has withstood the onslaught of competition all this while. But the decade old Esteem failed to stand in front of newer, contemporary models like Renault’s Logan. Maruti started planning to replace the esteem and looked for options. But rather than developing an all new car Maruti took the modern yet cost efficient model i.e. stretching a hatchback to build a sedan. In Europe, Renault is making hatchbacks,sedans,pick-ups and MUVs based on logan platform. Swift Dzire is the outcome of the model and it is built on the Maruti Suzuki’s highly successful Swift platform.

When we are given an oppurtunity to test drive the swift Dzire, we wish to find out just two things – whether the dzire sedan lives upto the value of swift brand and whether it can pull the crowds as the esteem did. Let’s check out.

1) Maruti Swift Dzire: After the successful launch of swift hatchback, Maruti started the swift Dzire project in 2005. But unlike the swift in which Indian engineers worked under their Japanese counterparts, Swift dzire is fully designed and developed in India.Indian engineers has conceptualized and designed the swift Dzire at a cost of about of Rs30crores. Swift dzire will be solely in India. Unlike the swift which is more european. Swift Dzire is designed to suit the taste of Indian consumers. Dzire’s chrome boot lid which runs between the two taillamp cluster.

2) Maruti Swift Dzire: Maruti has retained most of the swift components to keep a check on the Dzire’s price. The result is very few differences in styling, the swift dezire is a lookalike of swift barring the stubby boot. At the front, Maruti has given the swift Dzire a new two-slatted grille in the middle with chrome lipping and a slightly different foglamp inserts. But you cannot tell whether the car is swift or swift dzire by looking only at the front.

3) Maruti Swift Dzire: If swift can be chractercised by its love me or loathe me styling the new dzire has increased the factor further. Dzire styling is sure to draw many more debates. To facilate the notchback style boot Maruti has made the C-pillar more chunky and it slopes to merge with the stubby boot. The high deck boot sits on the large muscular rear bumper sourced from SX4. The turn indicators in the boomerang tail lamp blinks horizontally in swift dzire. The chrome boot lid which is easily the largest in any indian car dominates the rear. Overall proportion of the car is good but it dilutes the swift ready for the race appeal.

4) Maruti Swift Dzire: Maruti Suzuki DDIs uses the same swift powertrain for the new swift dzire. Neither the power ratings nor the gear ratios are revised. The brilliant DDiS engine produces maximum power of 75bhp at 4000rpm and 190Nm of peak torque. G13B petrol engine sourced from Esteem develops 87 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 115Nm at 4,500 rpm.

5) Maruti Swift Dzire: We drove Dzire diesel and found that the performance is very similar to the Swift hatch. It manages to reach 60kmph from stand still in just 6 seconds. The refinement is top notch and it excels in mileage section too. Swift Dzire returns 16kmpl in our combined city and highway drive

6) Maruti Swift Dzire: Maruti says the the suspension at the rear is retuned to offer better comfort and to bear the additonal weight. But the fact that swift dzire is heavier than the swift hatch by just 30kgs means there is no discernible change in handling chracteritics. Turning radius remains the same and the addition of boot does not make itself felt even while negotiating tight corners. The steering feels light and accurate and body control is good. Though the alloy wheels in dzire looks different from the swift hatch Maruti has retained the same narrow tyres used in the swift hatchback. The end result is dzire does not have adequate grip on the road similar to its sibling.

7) Maruti Swift Dzire: ABS and Dual Airbags makes the swift dzire one of the safest car in its class. Indigo CS (Compact Sedan) and Ford Ikon with which dzire competes doesn’t have these features. Swift Dzire also features a muscular front and rear bumpers. The rear bumper features two reflectors and a fog lamp. An additional stop lamp offers additional safety.

8) Maruti Swift Dzire: Swift Dzire comes in seven colours – Arctic white, silky silver, clear beige, midnight black, bright red, azure gray and sovereign blue. All the colours are available with beige upholstery.

P.S:Our sincere thanks to M.Jayakumar, ABT Maruti (massales@abtlimited.com), Guindy, Chennai (9994475222).

Is the worst over?

India’s leading two wheeler manufacturer has come out with double digit growth after a long time. All the two wheeler manufacturers have posted negative sales for more than past 6 months. Hero Honda eported a 15.36 per cent jump in motorcycle sales during March at 3,20,594 units as against 2,77,915 units in the same month last year. The company’s total sales for the financial year 2007-08 marginally increased to 33,37,142 units from 33,36,756 units in the previous fiscal. “The year 2007-08 has seen a leadership performance from us. Despite the industry slowdown, we have been able to manage positive growth thereby taking our share in the domestic motorcycle market upward of 52 per cent,” Hero Honda Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer Pawan Munjal said in a statement. Buoyed by the demand Hero Honda has said it will open its third plant on April 8. Few months back Hero Honda put the idea of building a third plant on hold because of the continued negative sales.  Hero Honda has already announced it will launch as many as 12 new products in the next 18 months.
