Is GM India under trouble?

Ever since the bankruptcy report broke out, we have been receiving thousand of mails from customers across India doubting the future of GM India. We believe its necessary to clarify the things here. The matiz owners who burnt their hands when the Daewoo went bankrupt know the pain. Coming back to the GM story, there are two thing you must know

* GM India is not filed under US bankruptcy filing

* GM (the parent company) will no longer fund the Indian or any overseas operations.

Future of GM India?

While the first one is a good news for anxious customers, the second is certainly not. But we thank GM India to take account of the situation and responding swiftly with banners saying ‘There for you, There for India’. “We are committed to ensuring that our customers continue to receive a top-notch sales, service, spare parts and warranty coverage experience. Our dealers will also continue to receive all our carlines, while our suppliers will continue to work with us to supply parts and components,” said Mr Karl Slym, President and Managing Director, GM India. GM India also reiterates that its plans are intact and it will launch its Cruze brand and a mini-car on schedule; and that the automobile company plans to have 250 sales and service outlets in India by the end of 2009.

But will the GM Indian operations will be as usual as it was in the past. Seems like not. GM India which has proposed to build a power train plant in Maharashtra at an investment of $200 million is now finding it difficult to raise money.  Though GM’s subsidiary is a profitable unit unlike its global counterparts, the profit is very modest. GM sold only 53,719 units in FY08-09. According to  Mr Nick Reilly, General Motors Group’s Vice-President and President for Asia-Pacific even the working capital for the GM India needs to be raised and even that has been difficult as of now. “Working capital can be collateralised with receivables and inventories and is usually relatively easy to raise. But even this has been a little difficult the past few months,” he said. Also he admitted that the sales in the first four months have declined because of “customer perceptions” about the fate of the parent company’s future. “The market has been quite weak and our competitors, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor India, have been very aggressive in terms of market incentives, but we can’t match them,” he added.

Outcome of the GM bankruptcy

The resale value of GM products which is already at bad state (blame the massive discount offers) may hit an all time low.

GM global operations

GM the struggling auto giant was the top auto maker till recent times and when hit by economic meltdown badly. Resulting the automakers to rely on taxpayers money to run. GM was critcized for developing gas guzzlers like Hummer when its peers ran behind fuel efficient hybrids. GM has lost $88 billion since 2005 is in the process of cutting debt, workers and  selling non-profitable brands. The opel unit is already sold to Magna and Hummer went to a chinese auto maker. Saab and Saturn will also be sold. Fiat is said to be keen on buying GM’s south american operations. The new GM  might be built around the Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick brand. But US Federal Governement would make the final call.

GM sells Hummer to a Chinese maker

A day after GM filed bankruptcy,  GM has found a buyer for its iconic brand Hummer. Though GM has not divulged who is the buyer and how much the buyer paid. It is reported to be bidding between $150 million and $250 million to buy Hummer from GM. However, as part of the deal with Sichuan Tengzhong GM would continue to produce Hummers till 2010. GM sold 27,485 Hummers in US last year, which  is down 51 per cent from 2007

Royal Enfield Classic C5

We have been hearing a lot on Mahindra’s foray into US market, but what we failed to notice is the launch of C5 motorcycle by an Indian auto maker. It’s not TVS (few months back we informed you about TVS plans to sell apache in America) but Royal Enfield. After launching the G5 with its new Unit Construction Engine, Royal Enfield is all set to launch the classic C5 in USA. Americans living in most states except California can get the C5 and cruise. Californians have to wait till the spring of 2010 as Royal Enfield’s C5 to clear the regulations only by that time. The air cooled, fuel injected, single cylinder displacing 499cc generates 27bhp and transmission is a five speed one. Royal Enfield claims the C5 can reach a top speed of 130kmph.  According to the importer, C5 delivers an impressive fuel efficiency of 80mpg(34kmpl)  under test conditions. Royal Enfields C5 UCE comes with a two-year unlimited mileage warranty. The thumper can be started only by thumb(electric start only no kick lever). C5 usee18 inch tyres at the front and the rear. Braking is through 11 inch disc brake at the front and drum at the rear. Bajaj to re-enter 100cc segment

Bajaj Auto which exited the 100cc segment two years back plans to re-enter the segment on account of falling sales. Bajaj once said that it will not compete with Hero Honda in 100cc segment instead it would launch 125cc+bikes and sway away buyers from 100cc segment. Following the announcement, it introduced a new engine platform called DTS-Si and it launched a new motorcycle called XCD 125cc. It also upgraded the platina to 125cc segment. But none of these motorcycles failed to make the cut. On the contrary Hero Honda moved forward aggressively and increasing the gap from Bajaj in terms of sales. Now to counter the sagging sales, Bajaj wants to re-enter the 100cc market. We informed you earlier, Bajaj is producing a ultra low cost bike with a chinese manufacturer. Bajaj’s ultra low cost bike might be christened as ‘steel’  and Bajaj will also export the bike to african countries like Nigeria.

Earlier this month, Bajaj started production in China and have shipped 1,000 made-in-China bikes to Nigeria through India. Bajaj currently produces boxer in China.Chances are high that Boxer might also be re-launched again in India. With the ultra low cost steel and boxer, Bajaj might hope to give Hero Honda bikes a run for its money. Commenting on the low cost 100cc bike Bajaj Auto, Managing Director, Rajiv Bajaj said, “We are looking at numbers above 20,000 units per month for this motorcycle,” .

Maruti plans new alto

Maruti Suzuki plans to facelift its flagship product – Alto to meet the upcoming Bharat IV emission norms. Also which has been ruling the Indian passenger car market for past many years will get a new KB series engine. Maruti might use the tuned down engine of A-star to keep the cost under check and give Chevrolet spark and Hyundai santro a run for its money. Maruti Suzuki MD & CEO S Nakanishi said, “We have exhausted our quota of new cars with eight new launches in India in the past three years. Now we are looking at strengthening our leadership by refreshing our old portfolio.” The company has developed the new KB series petrol engines with an investment of Rs 1,200 crore, which will be strapped in several of these cars”. We have already reported on Omni,800 and Versa facelift. Maruti will also strap Bharat IV compliant engines in Swift and Grand Vitara before April 2010.

Maruti which is aggressively working on upgrading its models to suit Bharat IV emission models also plans to facelift its beleaguered models – Zen esitlio and versa.

Compared to swift and alto, zen estilo failed to take off for Maruti Suzuki even after launching many versions of the hatchback.
