Honda Jazz Test Drive

If 20-20 is the most lovable game for modern cricket lovers, how could even a player like Sachin can give a miss. Honda may not be the master blaster of Indian auto industry but the absence of any small car in its portfolio makes it a relatively small player in the market. Yes, India is country of hatchbacks. Every now and then a manufacturer is coming up with a hatchback to capture one of largest small car  market in the world. Maruti Suzuki which has more than 50% market share virtually rules the small car market. It sells almost seven hathcbacks including the recently launched Ritz. Honda which has been successfully in every segment it presents wants tor try its hand in the most competitive small car market. Can it replicate the same and wean away customers of Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors. We  test drove the Honda jazz in India’s fun capital – Goa and tell you all you want to know about the jazz

1) Honda Jazz: Like any other Honda, jazz is modern but pleasing. The styling is not revolutionary but razor sharp edges gives a modern look to the jazz.  Jazz sports a unique forward-leaning cabin form styling that highlights sharper lines, wider stance and aerodynamic styling. . A distinctive honeycomb grille is matched with larger, more sharply styled headlights to create an assertive look. However. the tall boy design necessities raked up windscreen and high roof line. The front windshield too big. Down the line in 10 years, i believe the bonnet will be a thing of the past.

2) Honda Jazz: From the sides. jazz is not attractive as from the front. Broad shoulders and larger glass house highlights the spaciousness of the cabin but it does not gel with the styling of the front or the rear. Also jazz lacks the alloy wheels like the city. The rear is dominated by large windscreen flanked by knife sharp tail lamp cluster. Overall the Jazz  is sporty and dynamic but it lacks the compactness of its peers and its not cute. Jazz is meant for more mature customers and it does the purpose.

3) Honda Jazz: Under the hood is the 1198cc i-VTEC specifically made for India (stroked down) to suit the small car excise norms. The 4-cylinder, 1198 cc engine featuring Programmed Fuel Injection pumps out a peak power of 90 PS  at 6,200 rpm and a peak torque of 110Nm at 4800 rpm. According to Honda, the i-VTEC regulates the opening of air-fuel intake valves and exhaust valves in accordance with engine speeds. By regulating valve opening to match engine speed, the agile i-VTEC engine adjusts its characteristics to realize both superior power and low fuel consumption.

4)  Honda Jazz: The i-VTEC is refined and the five speed manual transmission is slick. But the engine doesn’t have the enough low end grunt and it would require frequent gear changes to move in the city. The engine is sluggish below 2000rpm and taller fourth gear demands you keep revving the engine. However the i-VTEC offers good mid-range punch and high end performance. We managed to hit only 125kmph due to heavy rain. However it has more to offer.  According to ARAI – country’s premier automotive research agency which tests all vehicles sold in India, the jazz returned 16.1km/l under standard conditions. Our 100km test drive is inadequate to determine the mileage but we expect a decent number. Sadly there is no diesel, Skoda Fabia, Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki Ritz and Tata Indica Vista has an edge over the Jazz.

5) Honda Jazz: While the heavy shower hampered our test drive, it gave an incredible play-field to test the handling characteristics of the Jazz. The windy and wet roads of Goa with heavy showers thrown a big challenge to Jazz. However the jazz overcame the hurdle with ease. The steering is light and would be perfect to zig-zag in the city.  But it failed to gain weight in proportion to the speed. Hit the corner at high speed, turn her she moves with ease. The michelin175/65 R15 tyres offers excellent grip even on wet roads.  Though there is discernible body roll which is inevitable with the tall boys. The 2.5m wheel-based Jazz is stable around corners and straight-line stability is very impressive. However the ground clearance is just about adequate and the drivers have an arduous task of gliding the jazz over bad roads. Honda for its part has given a rubber moulding under the front bumper to protect it.

6) Honda Jazz: is available in six colours – Deep Sapphire blue, Habanero red, Crystal Black pearl, Tafeta white and sherbet blue and alabaster silver. Sadly there are no interior colour options to suit the exteriors.

Honda Jazz – Review

Pictorial review of Honda jazz – interiors

1) Honda Jazz: Jazz employs MacPherson strut suspension at the rear and torsion beam rear suspension at the rear. Honda has optimised the suspension to suit the Indian road condition. On the road, Jazz absorbs shock with ease. Even when you go off the road the vibrations are minimal. At higher speed the ride remains composed and part of the credit goes to comfortable seats.

2) Honda Jazz: Civic-style dash bits gives a upmarket look to this hatch. Honda’s characteristic three spoke steering wheel has made into jazz as well sports audio controls. On the face A/C vents and CD player (not the USB) is quiet easy to access even for the one who is around 5.5″ because of the high seating position. Ergonomics is good and the chunky knobs adds substance to the dashboard. The A/C is effective but Goa is not the right place to test it so we reserve our comment. Road noise is evident inside the cabin. The engine becomes noisy when rev hard and it gets transferred into the cabin as well.

3) Honda Jazz: The seats embraces all the body parts well and offers support. The three dimensional molding takes the credit. The leg room and head room is ample both at the front and the rear. Even with a 6″ foot driver, you can stretch your legs at the back. The three at the back is possible even for a long trip. But fat adults have to squeeze their shoulders as the shoulder room is just about adequate. All the seats features an adjustable head rest. The door gets a nice beige trim but its sure to get sandy. Jazz offers good visibility for all passenger and the cabin gets enough sunlight. It not claustrophobic because of high theatrical type seating position.

4) Honda Jazz: Truly speaking the Jazz is not a hatch its a mini multi purpose vehicle. Even the Honda globally promotes the jazz for its versatility, flexibility and adaptability. It’s not a regular Honda there is more emphasize on comfort and convenience. Your spouse and kids will surely love this hatch.  The car is bigger in every significant dimension but its just under 4m in length to comply small car excise duty.  But the Honda’s incredible packaging ability frees up space for occupants rather than the mechanicals. The fuel tank is chucked under the front seats instead of regular under boot position to create room for rear passengers. The spacious cabin is effectively used. You can stow whatever you wish.

5) Honda Jazz: In front of co-driver, there is two glove box with proper lids. Though the boxes are not deep to hold a laptop both arevery functional. Inside the upper glove box there is pen holder. Two cup holders on the extreme edges and in front of AC vents is sure to earn your praise. Really smart isn’t it! An under-seat box which can be accessed when the rear seat is hinged up is meant to store important papers.  Coming to the ‘magic seat’ that’s how Honda calls the Jazz seating. There are three modes – tall, utility and long to suit your convenience. Hinge up the rear seat squabs to create a storage space in the middle of the car. In this mode, you can just walk-in and walk out of the car. But that’s not the purpose, its meant to transport rose plant from ooty to your destination also to take your pet to swim. The cargo space is brilliant even when the rear seats are up it is 384 litres. But fold the rear seats flat at the pull of a handle it zoom up to 563litres and it can be further increased to 884 litres by folding the co-driver seat. The utility and long mode as the name suggest is meant to transport longer objects

honda_jazz_25honda_jazz_8honda_jazz_28

6) Honda Jazz: is available in three variants – jazz, jazz active and jazz sport. The base end gets integrated audio system, steering mounted audio system, 60:40 foldable rear seats, tiltable steering column, power windows and power steering. The instrument panel tells you instant fuel consumption, average fuel consumption, range and trip in addition to the usual warning lamps. On the safety front, Jazz gets dual airbags, ABS with brake assist and EBD.  Overall the jazz is quiet decently equipped but it is utilitarian. Features like dual tone interiors, climate control, electrically adjustable ORVM and cooled glovebox could have justified the premium price it commands.

honda_jazz_19

7) Honda Jazz: In addition to the jazz, jazz active sports tailgate spoiler, body coloured front sporty pedals, grille, front fog lamps. Top of the line jazz mode gets body side moldings, corner protector and mud flaps. Front side step garnish, rear side step garnish and instrument visor meter panel and outlet rings with silver finish are available in Jazz active and Jazz mode.

honda_jazz_2
First Impression: Like any other Honda, Jazz comes with a impeccable fit and finish, solid build quality and strong brand value. Also, it handles and rides well. Most importantly it has immense versatility and class leading cabin space that segment buyers would surely appreciate. Though we could not give you the fuel efficiency figure, we expect the mileage to be decent. On the flip side, the engine lacks is noisy and lacks the necessary low end grunt. Also, it is utilitarian and devoid few nice features. Overall, jazz might be an another winner for Honda. But the huge price tag and strong competitors like Maruti Suzuki Ritz and upcoming Punto would make the success tougher for jazz in this segment.

TVS to launch SR125

After the controversial Flame, TVS plans to launch a new motorcycle called SR125. The new SR125 is essentially the same Flame but under a new name.  Supreme court of India had issued an interim order allowing TVS to continue producing the Flame series but had restricted the company from marketing them. The order comes on the back of an interim stay from the Madras High Court that had in effect okayed TVS’ plans to manufacture Flame. Remember TVS has also announced it would apache RTR 180cc in June.

Bajaj Pulsar 180cc test drive and review

Following the war waged against its supremacy in the 150cc+ segment by TVS and Yamaha, Bajaj has come up upgraded variants of its pulsar family of motorcycles. Bajaj has launched new 2009 pulsar 150cc and 180cc models. Can these upgrades extend the life of pulsar brand? Is the new pulsar is good enough to take on the new bikes like Yamaha FZ-16? We check out the new Bajaj pulsar 180cc

bajaj_bulsar_180cc_33

Bajaj Pulsar 180cc: Visually, there is not much difference  to tell this a 2009 model. However, on closer attention you can reveal a lot. New pulsar 180cc borrows few cues from 180cc. Tank shrouds on both sides of the tank gives it an aggressive profile.  Adding to that is the 37mm front forks. 180cc embraces the contemporary all black theme. From the forks to engine to rear suspension everything gets matte black finish. A new bold analog white back tachometer makes it to easy to read even at bright sunlight.

bajaj_bulsar_180cc_43

Bajaj Pulsar 180cc: Clip-on handle bars, split seats and split grab rail are other new cosmetic upgrade in the pulsar 180cc.But the real attractive quotient is the larger profile 120/80 * 17 incher tyre at the rear which adds muscle to 180cc. New pulsar 180cc also gets a new rear sprocket and the O-ring chain. Similar to the 200cc pulsar, kick lever is thrown out and ignition is only through battery in the new pulsar 180cc.

Bajaj Pulsar 180cc: Coming to the heart, 180cc pulsar retains the same DTSi engine. The 178.6cc mill produces slightly more power than its predecessor, it now generates 17.02bhp at 8500 rpm (compared to the earlier 16.5bhp at 8000rpm ). The peak torque stood at 1.45kgm at 6500rpm. On the road it translates into it gives slight edge on the performance over its predecessor. Also the 5-speed gearbox is smooth and case of false neutral is not existent. It reaches 60kmph from standstill at 6 seconds and manages to reach a top speed of 125kmph. However the increase in performance has an impact on the fuel efficiency. It returns only 40kmpl in the city and 47 in the highway.

The DTSi engine freely revives upto and sporty exhaust note pumps up the adrenaline

bajaj_bulsar_180cc_36

bajaj_bulsar_180cc_44

Bajaj Pulsar 180cc: On the dynamics, the increase in wheelbase by 25mm to 145mm compared to the predecessor makes it more stable. Braking is through 260mm disc at the front and 130mm drum at the rear. Thanks to new fatter rubber, the straightline stability remains good and there is a significant improvement in cornering ability. Pulsar’s trademark ride quality is the key differentiator over its competetiors. But for the sake of performance and spirited driving, Bajaj engineers have compromised on ride quality.  Ride has become little stiffer.

bajaj_bulsar_180cc_9

bajaj_bulsar_180cc_6

bajaj_bulsar_180cc_8

Bajaj Pulsar 180cc: The new pulsar 180cc may not be an all new exciting bike. But its a proven pulsar with welcome upgrades. Also the price is only marginally increased around Rs3000 and continues to be a good value for money bike.

Mahrashtra hike motor velhicle tax

Maharashtra Government has announced that  it has revised the motor vehicle tax. The present 7% tax is gone, now comes the three-tier tax structure in the recent State Budget. The 7 per cent will now be applicable to vehicles costing under Rs 10 lakh, going up to 8 per cent for those between Rs 10-20 lakh and 9 per cent for vehicles priced at over Rs 20 lakh. This translates into Rs50,000 increase in price for a Mercedes Benz which cost around Rs25 lakh. “This takes away a substantial part of the benefits that came with the Centre’s stimulus package. We were just beginning to see the momentum set by the excise duty cut and are very disappointed by this move,” said Mr Suhas Kadlaskar, Director (Corporate Affairs), Mercedes-Benz India.
