Fiat Grande Punto Test Drive

Pictorial Review of Fiat Grande Punto

Have you heard of recession? I heard a lot! but now i suspect the credibility of those mediahouses. Within a span of thirty days we have visited the launch of four major cars out of which three of them are premium hatchbacks. We saw the Maruti Suzuki’s Ritz and Honda’s Jazz following the two is the Fiat’s supermini – the Grande Punto. The 350km drive from Delhi to Himachal gave us an opportunity to test Grande Punto to its extreme.

1)  Fiat Grande Punto: Styled by the maserati designers, Grande Punto stands odd among the toy cars with its sleek styling. The large, curvaceous grille reminds the legendary Maserati and teardrop-shaped headlamps are not just classy but also conveys real dynamism. The front overhang is large to score higher rating at the EuroNcap but the designers get the credit for making the front a homogeneous unit there is no clear line between windscreen and bonnet. As typical of any italian cars, flowing lines all over the car. A strong shoulder line emanates from fender flows all the way to tailgate. The glassarea is not huge though Grande Punto sports a front quarter glass. The roofline tapers at the near the C pillar and merges with the pillar mounted taillamps. The rear is not attractive as front and the punto’s vertical taillamps like in the case of Ritz might be a subject of debate. Overall, the grande punto inherits the distinctiveness of its italian siblings and is quiet impressive.

2) Fiat Grande Punto: Internationally Fiat sells Grande Punto with multiple engine options – two petrol (1.2L delivering 65 bhp and 1.4L delivering 77 bhp) and four diesel units (75 bhp or 90 bhp 1.3L and the 120 bhp or 130 bhp 1.9L). However the Indian punto is expected to come with 1.2L and 1.4L FIRE(Fully Integrated Robotised Engine) gasoline engines and the proven 1.3-litre multijet diesel. With the addition of Grande Punto, the 1.3L diesel popularly known as “world’s most relevant engine” now powers seven indian cars which includes – Palio, Indica Vista,Swift,Ritz, Swift Dzire and linea. All the engines will come with a five speed transmission. According to ARAI, Grande Punto 1.2L gasoline returned a mileage of  14.3kmpl under standard driving conditions. The fuel efficiency of Grande Punto 1.3L multijet diesel is reported as 19.2kmpl and for  punto 1.4L petrol as 13.8kmpl

3) Fiat Grande Punto: On the engine performance, there is not much difference between the paper and on the road except an one big surprise. The 1.2L gasoline mill is puny to pull this large hatchback.  It’s very much underpowered. Who would love it when you have 1.4L and legendary 1.3L multijet in the same car. Fiat has taken a bold step to launch the 1.4L FIRE instead of fiddling with small car excise duty. The bold step really does wonder. Though the rev savvy would beg for much powerful engine, the 1.4L is quiet adequate for Indian roads. It hits a top whack of 150kmph and at the same time driveability is also good. The biggest surprise the monster 1.3L multijet has turned softer. It’s not involving but the power delivery smooth and progressive. It scrotches all the way to 160kmph but it suffers from narrow power band.  Having driven all the variants, i would say 1.4L gasoline is the clear winner instead of 1.3L diesel unit.  The transmission unit makes most of the engine but you have to get used to. The clutch bite is sudden and  the transmission is rubbery. Grande punto  devoids the practical reverse gear lock system.

4) Fiat Grande Punto:Running on Goodyear 195/60 tyres the Grande Punto is an excellent compromise between ride and hnadling. We will come to ride quality in the later part of the test drive report, the handling is impeccable.  Steering is sharp and it transmits the right amount of feel to the driver. Also it is light like in any modern hatchback to zig-zag in the traffic. But what also hampers the punto’s capability is its large turning circle radius (5.4m)! similar to palio, you turning the car to 360″ needs large number of iterations.

5) Fiat Grande Punto: Braking is through ventilated disc at the front and drum at the rear. ABS is a standard fitment in emotion and emotion pack variants. 1190kg machine (punto diesel) stops with ease. The brake pedal is sensitive but lacks progression.  Straight line stability is superb and equally good is it cornering characteristics. The lively chassis which is capable enough to move the punto with much powerful engines (Remember Grande Punto Abarth edition) makes the driving a delight. The raspy exhaust note adds to it.Ground clearance at 165mm is quiet decent to move over large speed breakers of Indian roads.

6) Fiat Grande Punto: is available in six exciting colours –  Hip-hop black, Boscha Nova Red,Mica grey,Metallic grey, Exotica red and Electric blue

Fiat Grande Punto – Review

Fiat Grande Punto: Grande Punto shares the platform with the linea and hence mechanicals are identical. An independent suspension at the front is backed by a new torsion beam axle configuration. The wider opening doors makes ingress and egress easy. The cabin is insulated from most road shocks. However the noise penetrates into the cabin especially at higs revs.

Fiat Grande Punto: The styling of the interiors is classy but lacks charm. The flat-topped binnacle where the main dials are housed is unexceptional and the dull, light coloured interiors makes matter worse.  Steering wheel, central console and even the control knobs reminds the linea. Fit and finish is as good as in the linea.

Inheriting the Fiat’s bad DNA, awkwardly positioned pedals makes it difficult to find the right driving position. However the height adjustable driver seat and tilt adjustable steering compensates for it. Also, the steering wheel has raised cushions to encourage you to hold it at ten to two. All around visibility is good except the limited rear visibility.

Fiat_grande_punto_33

Fiat Grande Punto: As the name suggest, Grande Punto offers a spacious cabin but only for occupants at the front. With a lenght of 3,985 mm and 1,490 mm in height, the punto should have ample cabin space but not actually. Headroom for rear passengers is just about adequate and  the headrest is standard for all passengers on all variants. Three adults at the back is strictly for short ride. Legroom is quiet ok but only at the mercy of driver. Adults in the rear will find their knees brush the front seatbacks. Door pockets are lean and cubbyholes are minimal. Punto features single glove box.

The boot is quiet impressive (280L) and the punto comes with 60:40 foldable seats to accomodate longer objects. However, Punto’s high sill line is sure to earn criticism. The high sill line is necessitated to achieve better torisonal rigidity which is behind the Punto’s benchmark handling characteristics.

Fiat Grande Punto: Grande Punto was awarded maximum five star rating by Euro NCAP (European agency for safety testing). Though the Indian punto is different from the european one. Indian punto comes with ABS and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) on higher variants. Blue & Me system, height adjustable driver seat, electrically adjustable ORVM, CD player with steering mounted audio controls, alloy wheels, fog lamps, power windows, tilt adjustable steering, rear defogger and rear wiper makes the  Grande Punto a VFM product.

Fiat Grande Punto: The four variant of the Grande Punto are – Active, Dynamic, Emotion and Emotion pack. While the Grande Punto petrol models are priced between Rs3.99 lakhs and

Verdict: Grande Punto is not a hatch without faults. Dull interiors, bad ergonomics and cramped rear seats may receive your criticism daily. But it packs-in comprehensive equipment levels, state-of-the-art technology and the superior driving dynamics of large. Above  all, Grande Punto comes at an incredible price tag.  If the marketing and customer service programme is successful as it hopes, the Grande Punto is set to be a grand success for Fiat.

Bajaj to launch new Pulsar 220cc on June 23rd

As expected Bajaj will launch 2009 variant of its flagship product pulsar 220cc. Bajaj’s only fuel injected bike is due for a makeover for sometime. The new pulsar 220cc is claimed to have a top speed of 140kmph (the current one being 125kmph). An increase of few bhps would suffice to achieve this speed.  CNBC TV18 also reports that the new pulsar 220cc will be aggressively priced closed to Rs70,000 (at a massive discount of Rs15,000 from the current one). But we suspect the report as it would erode the brand and resale value of pulsar like anything.

Apart from the engine change and price reduction (if true), the new pulsar 220cc will get contemporary black theme and carbon fibre diffuser.
